In the short story “Flowers” by Alice Walker, she uses the motif of blindness and disease to dramatize Myop’s loss of innocence. Myop is given the name for a major symbolic reason. Her name is short for “Myopia,” which is a given to short sightedness. This metaphor is brought into play to show Myop’s naivety in the beginning of the story.
