Reflection on the Nonprescription Pharmacotherapy experience:

OTC course was a course designed to allow students to experience how a pharmacist in a community pharmacy like a Walgreens pharmacy would gather information and counsel patients on over the counter medications (OTC), i.e., nonprescription medications. In fact, the purpose of this course was to provide us with a fundamental understanding of community pharmacy practice and to foster a sense of community involvement through service learning. In my opinion, through this course we have developed the foundation we need to provide patient care, companionship, medication-related services and screening for medical problems. Importantly, we were required to do our service activities at Walgreen pharmacies in groups of 2. Given each student utilizes unique communication method to approach patients, working as team during our service activities at Walgreens pharmacies provided us a great opportunity to learn from each other. Furthermore, OTC labs and community service activities at Walgreens pharmacies provided us an exceptional opportunity to understand the professional functions of the pharmacist in community settings and begin to develop critical thinking skills for providing pharmaceutical care in community practice. Also, It helped us demonstrate the characteristics of a professional in practice-related activities. It was also a great opportunities to lean how to use community resources to provide essential services. Moreover, community service activities at the Walgreens pharmacies allowed us to apply what we have learned during OTC course, for example, medication/disease counseling, optimization of medication use, issues related to nutrient-medication …show more content…

Reviewing my performance, I believe I have greatly improved both my non-verbal and verbal communication skills. For instance, I have greatly improved my listening skills. To this end, I have learned that I need to give patients my undivided attention, and acknowledge the message. I also learn that, upon counseling patients on their medication, I need to open and guide the conversation with broad, open-ended questions such as “ what long-term health condition do you have?” I have learned that, in order to actively listen to patents and also have an effective communication with my patents, I need to summarize what I have heard and ask questions to check my understanding. I now know that how to deal with a patient that has some trouble expressing a point. In fact, I have learn that I need to encourage such patients with a simple smile, a nod or a positive question to show my
