George Washington Bush once said, “There’s no bigger task than protecting the homeland of our country.” Terrorism was and still is a huge problem in America and every other country in the world. We, as Americans, are privileged to live in a country where no real threats to our safety exist, no one pushes their religious or political beliefs on us and we are not threatened by an ongoing violence in our country. Although terrorism always has been and always will be an ongoing event, 9/11, the death of Osama bin Laden, and the Afghanistan war have been tremendous factors in learning how to protect this country.

Terrorism and the acts of terrorists are recognized by few as a new phenomenon, but known by many to be an old phenomenon. Terrorism has existed for decades and continues to thrive today. There are many definitions that were created to define terrorism and a terrorist act; however, the definitions are not one in the same. Essentially the definitions vary, and that depends on the person or organization providing the definition. The one often used or recognized is “terrorism is the use or threat of violence to achieve political objectives” (Gaines and Miller, 2014). This is the type of terrorism that the United States frequently experiences. Terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda, Boko Haram, or the Islamic State utilizes terrorist acts to punish the United States and to achieve their own personal objectives. Terrorist attacks have exacerbated tremendously over the past few years. This is largely due to the fact that terrorist groups are now more active in more countries than 9/11 (Bullock et al., 2013). Due to the growth of terrorist organizations and attacks, the United States is faced with new challenges. The challenges include: securing the United States from terrorism, homeland security growth and the possibility of another devastating terrorist attack. Even though these are challenges that are bound to affect the United States in some way, the United States is getting better equipped with preparing for terrorist attacks and the fallout of a terrorist attack. Within the last year the United States has been exposed to many terrorist attacks and threats that could or has harm the American people. Every individual’s definition of terrorism is different some describe it as a strategy and tactic. Another will describe it as sacred obligation, some will say it’s a justified stand against domination. Obviously, it depends on whose point of view is being represented (Brown, 2008).

Terrorism in the United States, as well as other countries, has become a major fear in the public eye. When terrorism is committed somewhere by a group of people, or an individual, who live in another country, it is called foreign terrorism. There are reasons to why these people perform in ways of terror. The causes and effects of foreign terror can be alarming, dreadful, and frightful.

Protecting the United States from terrorists has become a major issue since the attacks on 9/11. Terrorism is defined as the “premeditated, deliberate, systematic murder, mayhem, and threatening of the innocent to create fear and intimidation in order to gain a political or tactical advantage, usually to influence an audience” (Poland, 2011). Fear and intimidation seem to be some of the most prevalent Terrorism occurs on both the international and domestic fronts.

U.S. Department of Defence defines terrorism as the” illegitimate use or helpless use of energy or forcefulness against personalities or possessions to torment and threaten governments’ societies, frequently to accomplish governmental, spiritual or philosophical intentions”.

Throughout the year’s thousands of individuals have lost their lives due to terrorist attacks. Many foreign countries have witnessed firsthand the evil that terrorism can bring on a daily basis. Truth is, although we as Americans have not witnessed much of it up until recent years, terrorism has been around for many decades now. The most current and imminent threat to the future of the United States is foreign terrorism, which occurs primarily outside the US territory, due to the increasing development in weapons of mass destruction.
