Specific Purpose: To persuade the audience to chose life Abortion is when a mother decides to terminate her pregnancy. Many people have different opinions about this ethical and moral issue. Some people think that abortion is okay, while others believe that it is inhumane and against their moral and/or religious beliefs. (Advance Slide)

ARGUMENTS OPPOSED TO ABORTION According to a poll conducted in December 2010, 44% of people approved of abortion, but 56%-- the majority--do not approve.
Just because an abortion is legal, that does not make it morally or ethically correct.
An unborn baby is alive, and has a heartbeat 22 days after conception. At 6 weeks, fingernails form, and at week 8, a baby is able to hear. At 20 weeks, a baby can feel pain.
Most women who have have legal abortions often have serious consequences regarding their future health, fertility, and psychological/emotional problems. In the United States, abortion was generally not life threatening long before it became legal in 1973. Maternal mortality is determined to a much greater extent by the overall quality of maternal health care than by the legal status or availability of abortion.
The late Dr. Bernard Nathanson, formerly a leading abortionist and co-founder of NARAL Pro-choice America, wrote in 1979 that the argument that women could die from dangerous, illegal abortions in America “is now wholly invalid and obsolete” because “antibiotics and other advances have dramatically lowered the abortion
While the pro-choice group has political support, the pro-life members have ideals centered on ethics. Such ethics derive from religious beliefs, as those of Randall Terry, “leader of the militant anti-abortion group: Operation Rescue” (Randall Terry). Terry has led many protests at abortion clinics, causing public disruption and more than fifty arrests. Along his side are his wife and members of his church. This further shows the kind of people in support of life for the child to be. Although their reason to protest is rational, the methods for spreading their ideas are questionable. NAF (National Abortion Federation) has “reported more than five thousand crimes against pro-choice organizations, clinic members, and even new reports” (Raw Story). Among these crimes are, burglary, vandalism, trespassing, and stalking. In other words, these people claim to be pro-life, but will put lives in danger to send a message.Represented above is a political cartoon of a man holding up a sign saying: “PRO-government in your private LIFE.” This image suggests that being pro-life will lead to government intrusion in a woman’s privacy. The fact that a man is holding the sign, further emphasizes the growing support from men in this
To commence with, during development a human being grows at an astonishingly rapid pace. According to Guttmacher Institute, “89% of all abortions in the United States are performed in the first trimester of pregnancy.” (2005). In the first trimester (16 weeks), the baby’s eyes and eyelids, nose, mouth, and tongue have formed, and the baby's reproductive organs also develop. The cardiovascular system is the first system that begins to function. The baby’s heart begins to circulate their own blood, similar to his mother’s heart, twenty-two days after conception. Electrical brain activity can be detected at six or seven
Abortion has been one of the biggest controversies of all time. Many people believe it is 100% wrong and even consider it to be murder. The definition of abortion is; “The termination of pregnancy by the removal or expulsion from the uterus of a fetus or embryo prior to being capable of normal growth.” These pro-life believers do not support the idea of abortion and believe it should be illegal. Many of these supporters do not know that if abortion were illegal they would still be performed, unfortunately by an uneducated staff. Over 70 thousand maternal deaths occur every year because of unsafe abortions. These women die, so the idea of supporting pro-life is contradictory, this is why the nation should be pro-choice.
woman’s right to choose what she does with her body. These pro-abortionists claim that anti-abortionists are truly against the
On the other hand, pro-choice advocates argue that “Every person has the right to choose. It would be unfair to restrict a woman 's choice by prohibiting abortion”, "Every woman should have control over her own body. Reproductive freedom is a basic right.", "Abortion is a decision between a woman and her doctor. It 's no one else 's business. Everyone has a constitutional right to privacy.", "Abortion rights are fundamental for the advancement of women. They are essential to having equal rights with men." and "The circumstances of many women leave them no choice but to have an abortion." (Alcorn). While anti-choice activists like to hype supposed examples of women having abortions to keep their careers alive, it’s far more common that women have abortions because they feel unable to properly care for the child. Even if it were ethical to force women to carry pregnancies to term, it would not be ethical to force the birth of children who
The acceptance and practice of abortions has greatly increased in America, with nearly 53 million legal abortions being performed from 1973 to 2011. To put this into perspective, that’s nearly 77 times the number of homicides and nonnegligent manslaughters from 1972 to 2007. ("Sourcebook of Criminal Justice Statistics”). As of abortion rates in 2008, three in ten American women will have an abortion before the age of 45 (“Abortion ProCon.org”). Abortion has especially grown in acceptance among the younger generation, with 75% of women who have abortions being under the age of 30. Another shocking fact about abortion is that 9.3% of women who had abortions in 2011 had already had three or more abortions previously. In fact, a child is killed by an abortion in America every 26 seconds (“Online For Life”). While abortions can be dangerous for the mother, the mortality rate is only about 0.6 out of 100,000, which is about fourteen times smaller than the mortality rate of childbirth. So what do activists have to say about abortion?
In 1973, the United Stated Supreme Court made a critical decision on abortion laws. This decision was made because of Roe, a pregnant woman. She brought a class action suit challenging the constitutionality of the Texas abortion laws. These laws made it a crime to obtain or even attempt an abortion. The defendant was county District Attorney Wade. Roe won her lawsuits at trial. A three-judge District Court panel tried the cases together and “held that Roe had standing to sue and presented justiciable controversies, and that declaratory relief was warranted.” The district court also held that the Texas abortion statutes were void as vague and for over broadly infringing the Ninth and Fourteenth Amendment rights of the plaintiffs.
On January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court, on the case of Roe v Wade, ruled to legalize abortion in all fifty US states. Forty two years after this decision, approximately 56 million abortions have been performed in the US alone and this number continues to climb drastically day to day. For some individuals, this number is simply not enough. For example, in her article, It Is Time to Integrate Abortion into Primary Care, Susan Yanow argues the case that abortion is here to stay. With this observation, she further believes that the procedure should be made more available to all women, and likewise, any physician should be easily allowed to perform abortions.
After abortion was legalized in 1973, following the Roe v. Wade case, crime rates dropped
The argument whether abortion should be legal or not has been raging for years. In America where democracy rules and the right to freedom of choice are set at a high priority among citizens, it’s not hard to see pro-choice and pro-life ideals going head on. In this paper I will explain some of the major reasons woman have abortions, as well as how if we are truly a democratic society and we do have freedom, then pro-choice and legalizing abortion is the answer. I will also talk about ethical issues, and how the effect of legalized abortions has affected other countries, as opposed to countries where abortions are illegal.
In 1972, the year before Roe v. Wade was decided in court, there were a counted 586,760 abortions in the United States. In 1973, Roe v. Wade was decided in January of this year, there were 615,831 abortions; this was an increase of only 4.95 percent. However, after Roe v. was decided in the Supreme Court, the number of women who died from having abortions decreased dramatically. In 1972, 65 women for every 100,000 reported abortions died. In 1973 to 2004, when abortion was legal, 439 women died from having abortions, that is about 14 women dying per year. The decrease from 65 women dying in one year to 14 women dying per year on average, was a 79.46% decrease in mortality rates (Centers for Disease Control). Modern abortion procedures are very safe, and less than .25 percent of modern abortions lead to lasting negative health effects. If the federal court were to overturn Roe v. Wade, women would continue to seek dangerous, illegal abortions, but more women would die from those
Although abortion was legalized in 1973 by the Roe v. Wade case, legal is not equivalent to moral. The Roe v. Wade case has had many disputes against its ruling, but the ultimate decision still remains the law. According to Butts & Rich (2016), the following 41 years after the case decision was made, 57 million abortions were performed. This only includes abortions that were registered. Legalizing elective abortions gave permission for women to end a pregnancy for any given reason. This author does not believe that it is moral for an abortion to be done because the mother is scared or feels like it is not “the right time.” The pro-life view simply acknowledges the rights of an unborn fetus. Unless the mother’s life is threatened by continuing the pregnancy, abortion is not a solution. No matter the case, a nurse must consider their own beliefs on this matter in order to provide competent care.
Many argue is it the women’s or the foetus’ rights and values that are being trampled on? “Pro-choice movements sometimes fall back on an abortion rhetoric that seems to dehumanize and trivialize the death of a foetus as a way to humanize and make important the reproductive rights of women.” (Wolf p54) “Women can treat an unwanted foetus as a violation of her civil rights and is therefor justified tin using force to expel it” (McMillan pA12) The decision is not up to the mother because she is not God. Only God, the ultimate creator has the right to choose who may live and who shall die. Humans do not have the right or the power to control the quality of life and to avoid suffering. “The issue of abortion is not just life, but how life is created and the extent to which human intention and control the process, both before and after birth.
Abortion is the deliberate termination of a pregnancy. Abortion is never the answer for an unwanted pregnancy and there is so much more to know about what abortion actually is. In this essay I will explain abortion from a logical, moral point of view and I will share information on other things dealing with abortion.
In this argumentative essay, I would be arguing against legalizing abortion in the country. The negative consequences and impacts from abortion is so enormous that it can’t be overemphasized. One of the greatest problem of legal abortion is the horrifying inhumane prospect of ‘abortions on demand’ at any point in pregnancy. I strongly believe every unborn child have a right to live. And the termination of this unborn child willingly for whatever reason can only be murder. The rate of abortion in the united states per live birth as of 2015 is 12.1 abortions per 1,000 live births of women between the ages of 15 and 44. According to statistical medical records, the high abortion rate was mostly recorded among women in their 40’s.
