Professionalism Case Study: Pre-K Scenarios
Scenario One
According to the Satisfactory Progress and Professional Conduct policy, professionalism is expected from ASU students in all settings, including clinical field experience, PreK-12 school-related and university settings. For Patricia to exhibit professionalism in the university setting, she should engage in clearly and respectfully communicate with all contacts, participate in conversation in an equitable manner, articulate ideas coherently, maintain appropriate confidentiality, and accept responsibility for her actions along with the consequences. If Patricia can deliberately alter her behavior to meet the Professional Conduct policy standards, she will likely be able to combat her instructor’s concerns of unprofessionalism.

According to news reports, three teachers and an assistant principal in this district participated in activities that ranged from physically hurting students, cursing in front of students, and abusing paid leave time. Each of the employees involved was suspended for 30 days. Overall, the actions that the administrator and teachers partook in negatively impacted students and showed little regard for upholding the professionalism of education.
Teachers should be mindful of their actions both in and out of the classroom. In regards to social media, many school districts have guidelines for appropriate usage that should be followed. In addition, teachers should never post confidential material or information that could harm their reputation or their students’ reputation. Teachers must uphold a sense of professionalism and should only provide students access to social media profiles that are directly and solely related to course material. As educators, we should model professionalism at all times, and this includes social media communication.
Scenario
Should schools use social media to communicate? Most schools have a Facebook or Twitter account to communicate with parents and students. We know that social media is the quickest way to make information available to the public. Students don’t think they can survive without social media.
1. In your own words, define professionalism and how it relates to you as a health care provider? The essay must be limited to 250 words.
Facts: Ten students attending Central High School in the Columbus, Ohio, Public School System were suspended for a total of 10 days from school for various school violations. The administrator of Central High School in Columbus, Ohio, suspended the students without any formal hearing or notification of parents. The students filed a
As principal of TWH, I feel it is vital to keep the urgency focused on academics. It is my belief that if we set students up for challenging and engaging classroom instruction, discipline issues will start to lessen. However, my teachers will feel supported and respected, and that will be communicated regularly to our students and school community. “…leaders treat others fairly, equitably, and with dignity and respect—and they establish the expectation that others in the school community act in a similar manner” (Murphy, 2006).
Administrators have responded to criticism by saying that they must treat all infractions the same way. This is not indicative of fairness, especially if a student who was caught with a pair of nail clippers was treated the same as a student who came to school with a firearm in their backpack. This is not to take away from the importance of taking a firm stand against violence. “To get a true picture of school violence, you must look at reported incidents, unreported incidents, and underreported
We all hear about what a teacher did on social media that was inappropriate all over the internet. But we never really hear about the good things. I read an article in Scholastic, about a teacher named Christopher Casal who a technology teacher for an Elementary school in Brooklyn that uses social media in his classroom and the kids are learning from it. Casal works as a technology teacher for the Magnet School of Math, Science and Design Technology. He has taught for many years and decided to bring Twitter into his classroom. Twitter is a social media website where you can make posts that contain 120 characters that can tell others in a few words are doing or thinking. Casal had the brilliant idea of bringing Twitter into his second grade
personal lives. Many times teachers put their information on social media. This is a big mistake
Introduction: Mr. Nichols thanked everyone for attending. He explained why the subcommittee was developed; the goal is to have a workable plan ready for the fall. Mrs. Everly thanked Mr. Nichols for his leadership on the Board, and by bringing this conversation to the table, we can only get better. At the administrator meeting last week with Mrs. Joseph, administrators talked about the communication issues within the discipline process that need to be worked out; there is a need to tighten up communication between the office and teacher. Mr. Nichols noted that central office administrators have already been working very hard on this subject, but he thinks it is important for administrators to receive input from teachers and parents.
As human beings, we are often presented with dilemmas that make us question our integrity and moral turpitude. School administrators, in particular, engage in multiple decision-making processes on a daily basis, as they are responsible for developing and maintaining a safe teaching and learning environment on their campus. In fact, Weaver (2007) adds that many school administrators make their decisions based on equity, fairness, and student achievement. After analyzing the case of Richard Inman, the junior high school assistant principal, it became evident that he made the decision not to complete the expulsion paper based on his personal code of ethics. That is, he made his decision based on his values, goals, and beliefs regarding the success of every student in his school. Moreover, because he was raised in the same neighborhood as his students, he felt he could identify with their struggles and therefore made a personal agenda to cultivate a relationship with the students
Everywhere you go and in everything you do, professionalism comes in to account in some way or another. Professionalism has been defined as, “a strict adherence to courtesy, honesty and responsibility when dealing with individuals or other companies in the business environment” (Clarke, 2015). When it comes to the career of nursing, professionalism is taken to a whole other level. Not only does professionalism come in to account with your business professionals and peers, but you have patients with whom professionalism is highly practiced as well. Professionalism in nursing means that you are able to handle all the responsibilities given to you in an efficient and proper way. It means that when you are given an order that needs to be carried out by a doctor or a patient who needs your help, you adhere to what is being expected of you in a timely manner. Physicians put trust into nurses in order to carry out orders that are needed to save patients’ lives. If you’re not looked at as professional and responsible, it is going to be very hard to have a successful career. Responsibility is what nursing is all about. Professionalism in nursing means that along with taking on big responsibilities, you have discipline. Discipline in nursing is crucial to being successful. Not only to keep your patients safe, but so that you personally are on the ball and looked at by others as professional, therefore, making you a great nurse. Professionalism means that you have the
Social media has become a huge part of our lives and the younger generation is becoming more involved with this new technology. However, the use of social media has been a great debate in classroom settings. School districts have been conflicted with the two options: to teach along and incorporate social media into the classroom or to restrict the use of social media during school hours.
Before starting this Introduction to Healthcare this quarter I actually thought professionalism was only about how you dressed yourself, but now I know that your attitude and the way that you conduct yourself plays an important part in professionalism as well. How you present your work is also a part of professionalism.
Professionalism is a (1) Theoretical knowledge on which practical or skill based activity rests, considering this, I applied my theoretical knowledge such as differentiate, individual needs into my practice. (2) Professionalism is formal, accredited qualification, providing grounding in theoretical knowledge; according to these, I am doing my assignments and voluntary teaching practice to obtain a certificate. (3) Licence to practice or some proof of occupational competence; according to this, I showed my Confirmation of Student Enrolment on Initial Teacher Training letter to my manager to get a voluntary teaching practice. (4) Professionalism is a code of professional conduct or practice; I follow my organisation’s rules and regulations such as health and safety rules, equality and diversity, time keeping, etc. (5) Professionalism is a professional body that represents the interests of practitioners and regulates their activity in some way, in my teaching practice their awarding bodies are Tinder Foundation, BBC Learning English and British Council. They regulate my organisation’s lesson plans and activities in some way and I follow them. (handouts, 2014)
Early 1970s students in Columbus, Ohio were causing destructions in schools; Central High School in Columbus, Ohio was one of the schools where students were disrupting class lectures and demonstration school property. This wrongdoing in Ohio allowed the school principal to suspend students with valid reasons for ten days as long as they notified the parents within 24-hours of suspension. If they were expelled students were given the opportunity to appeal, but it was not guaranteed that everyone would have that privilege.
Does social media really help students in school? Does it help with a student’s ability to learn? When a student is on social media in school, are they just being distracted? Social networking has become a very widespread thing to do, but since teachers are allowing it in school, students seem to be more distracted. Although social networking in school may make students more interactive with others, teachers should not allow it in school because it distracts students from classwork, gives students anxiety, and social media is filled with inappropriate pictures and language that could get students into trouble.
