Racism is defined by merriam-webster.com as ‘1. A belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race. 2. Racial prejudice or discrimination.’ Racism exists among all races and ethnicities, but most prominently between whites and blacks. The most basic cause of racism begins with the idea that there is something different between different ethnicities. Though that thought is illogical, it is one that seems inevitable. The amount of hatred one can hold against another because of the difference in their skin pigmentation is uncanny. There were numerous racist comments made when President Obama decided to run, even attempts to try and falsely accuse him of not being of American dissent. Blacks were once slaves and treated no better than dos, and the thought of having a black man as the leader of the free world was one that metaphorically knocked some whites out of their seats.
Unfortunately racism does not only exist amongst whites and blacks but amongst the black community itself. Because the main reason for racism and segregation is to separate oneself from “lower” class or those who are “less” the black community has done the same within itself. “She had explained to him the difference between colored people and niggers. They were easily identifiable. Colored people were neat and quiet; niggers were dirty and loud.” (Morrison 87). Black people separated themselves from each other. After being told they weren’t as good as white people they took their anger out on other black people, rather than banding together and uniting to support each other. Those people find that to make themselves better, superior to others they must make those others feel inferior, and to do this they separate themselves.
