• This poem was very layered and symbolical, which was quite interesting to me as I had to analyze it meticulously in order to decipher each line of the text. Additionally, I found the poem to be very engaging as it forced me to comprehend the message from the perspective of a soldier rather than a journalist or reporter. • The first aspect of the poem that caught my attention was how reflective and nostalgic the soldier portrayed himself. One prime example of this occurring is when the soldier states, “Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;” (12). Here, he is referring to how much pleasure he had in the presence of his homeland, and his desire to go back. Next, the narrator proceeds to assure the reader of his devotion to his homeland by stating, “That there’s some corner of a foreign field that is for ever England.” From this, it is evident that the soldier holds the utmost amount of respect and loyalty to his country, and that he is even willing to put his life on the line in order to defend it. This also provides deeper insight into the mind of a soldier on the battlefield; it is astonishing that he can sustain such a high level of dignity while awaiting his death. The soldier then details how the soil of the Earth will be forever changed after his death when he declares, “There shall be In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;” It can be concluded that the soldier holds the idea dearly that his “dust” will be purer and finer than what was once concealed in the foreign field, which further suggests how confident, masculine, and loyal a soldier must compose oneself even when encountering
