Someone with schizophrenia has a great difficulty maneuvering through everyday social interactions, specifically interpersonal relationships. There is a “loss of life roles”, where it is hard to decipher where oneself and others fit in to social settings (Browne & Courtney, 2007, p. 74). Social networks are weakened soon after the onset of schizophrenia. The importance of immediate and extended family increases in response to the need for “positive, supportive, reciprocating relationships” (Browne & Courtney, 2007, p. 77). Positive, social interactions are supportive for schizophrenic episodes but they cannot cure them. Another aspect of social life that is hindered by schizophrenia is the ability to make proper judgments about others. Many people find it difficult to make proper decisions about whether someone is good and trustworthy or not. The intensity of these symptoms at the onset of schizophrenic episodes gives a strong sense of the long-term prognosis, meaning that highly intense symptoms at onset lead to a poorer prognosis in the future (Siegel et al.,
There are many different mental illnesses, but schizophrenia is one of the least understood illnesses. Since schizophrenia is one of the least understood illnesses and has many different causes that make it harder for doctors to try and treat the illness, especially if it is not detected early. Just like any other serious illness, schizophrenia is critical to one’s functioning of life if not treated early on, which is why research on schizophrenia is so important. Additionally, schizophrenia is a serious, and complex illness that needs to be studied more in depth. Moreover, the longer schizophrenia is left untreated the more cognitive and social functioning begins to slowly diminish. (Santosh, Dutta Roy, Kundu, 2013). In addition, this social cognitive diminishment can lead to the impairment of the social cognitive ability “Theory of Mind (ToM),” which can make it difficult for one to interact normally with another person (Santosh, Dutta Roy, Kundu, 2013). Theory of Mind (ToM) is a social
Schizophrenia is one of the most well known and surprisingly frequent psychological disorders today. Patients who have this disorder have problems separating reality from fantasy or delusion. Typically, the person with schizophrenia starts off with a small paranoia about something or someone and continues to get more and more problematic until he/she has trouble functioning in the real world because of emotional, physical, mental, or financial reasons. Because of this, most people who end up homeless have Schizophrenia because they are unable to keep a job, Nathaniel Ayes in the book The Soloist. Nathaniel was a cello player attending the Julliard school of music, one of the world’s most prestigious performing art schools, until he
Insanity, then, is inordinate or irregular, or impaired action of the mind, of the instincts, sentiments, intellectual, or perceptive powers, depending upon and produced by an organic change in the brain.
The book “The Soloist” is about L.A. Times writer Steve Lopez discovering a musically gifted homeless man named Nathaniel Ayers. Desperately needing to catch a deadline Mr. Lopez considers writing a story about Nathaniel. While researching Mr. Lopez begins to discover interesting things about the talented musician. Nathanial Ayers was accepted to The Julliard’s School of music, the most prestige school for music in North America. After one year at Julliard Nathanial dropped out, it turns out that Nathanial had a case of Paranoid Schizophrenia that forced him into a spiral of madness, which soon caused him to become homeless and lose a chance at becoming one of the greatest musicians. Before reading this book I did have some knowledge about
Schizophrenia, a disorder that is in the brain that affects a person's actions, thoughts, and how they view things. People with schizophrenia often see things that are not actually happening, hear things that no one said, or even think something about someone that's not true and believe that it's actually real. People with this illness, “May see or hear things that don't exist, speak in strange or confusing ways, believe that others are trying to harm them, or feel like they are being constantly watched” (“Schizophrenia” 1). In the story, “The Hitchhiker” a boy named Jacob is facing many of these symptoms. Schizophrenia derives from the Greek words “split” and “mind”. Despite its name, it does not mean what it seems. When people hear the two words “split” and “mind’ they may automatically think of a multiple personality disorder, but that is different from schizophrenia (Barlow & Durand, 2015). Schizophrenia is actually a brain disorder in which reality is not interpreted correctly. Many people with schizophrenia hear voices, believe they are being stalked or watched by others, and do not always make sense when conversing. It has been discovered that those who suffer from schizophrenia, have dysfunctional neurotransmitters within their brain. This affects the message system in their brain (Nordqvist, 2015). Schizophrenia also affects the emotions of a person. Many times people with this disorder may seem withdrawn, or socially inept. It is hard for families, coworkers, and friends to keep a good relationship. There is even evidence showing how families’ actions and emotions
Schizophrenia is a brain disease; Schizophrenia’s main problem is with insanity. What is Insanity? Webster’s dictionary states it as “A deranged state of the mind occurring as a specific disorder (as Schizophrenia) (Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary 646).” The definition of insanity is closely related to schizophrenia described as a disorder. When having schizophrenia one's behavior and thinking change dramatically. One’s behavior might contain several signs as loss of personal contact, social withdrawal, diminution of appetite, depletion of hygiene, delusions and hallucinations are just to name a few. Individuals with schizophrenia many times have no outward appearance of looking ill. In another case, a paranoid schizophrenic would
Schizophrenia is a disorder that has an effect on about 25 million people around the world (Myers, 2010). Schizophrenia is a brain damage, naturally created by the human body, that is caused by the genetically determined vulnerability of the blood-brain barrier (Voronov, 2013). This psychiatric disorder, like most others, is characterized by changes in behavior, thinking, reduced ability to feel normal emotions, and mood (Abad et al., 2011). The unique thing about schizophrenia is that the symptoms are split into two different sections: positive symptoms (the presences of behaviors and or feelings that are not usually present in humans) and negative symptoms (the lack of behaviors and or feelings that are usually present in humans). Positive symptoms are characterized by the patient having delusions and or hallucinations while negative symptoms are characterized by the patient having affective flattening, alogia, avolition, anhedonia, and asociality (Nasrollahi et al., 2012). Although these are general symptoms for schizophrenia, the symptoms differ between genders.

This essay focuses on the diagnosis of schizophrenia, a major mental illness with much stigma and misinformation associated with it. World Health Organisation (WHO, 2012) epidemiological evidence suggests that schizophrenia is a mental illness affecting 24 million people worldwide. This essay will define schizophrenia and its characteristic signs and symptoms in relation to cognition, mood, behaviour and psychosocial functioning. The criteria enabling a diagnosis of schizophrenia are explored, as well as contemporary nursing care and pharmacological treatments. The positive and negative signs and symptoms of schizophrenia will be discussed and the treatment and care requirements outlined by the NSW Mental Health Act (2007) are also
Schizophrenia is a psychotic disorder that causes severe mental disturbances which disrupt ones thoughts, speech, and behavior. According to Paul Thompson, Associate Professor of Neurology, one percent of the world’s population suffers from this disorder. There is no one specific cause of schizophrenia, because it is caused by a combination of problems during development. It is a disorder which not only affects the patient, but their family and society as well. Schizophrenia can be a debilitating disorder, however, there are many treatments that can allow people who suffer from it to lead normal lives.
This man is Nathaniel Ayers, a talented musician who struggles with mental illness and depends
Based on a true story, The Soloist is about Steve Lopez, a Los Angeles Times columnist, who is in desperate need of inspiration for his articles. Mr. Lopez met Nathaniel Ayers in a park, not far from the news station. Nathaniel was a homeless man, playing a two-string violin when he first encountered Steve. Steve found out Nathaniel was a former student at the Julliard School for music but did not graduate due to the side effects of his schizophrenia. Nathanial had been battling his symptoms since he was in his early teens. After writing an article about Nathanial, Steve received a cello from a newspaper prescriber. The elderly woman asked Steve to give Nathaniel the instrument in hopes he would play it more often than she could. Throughout the movie, Steve provided Nathanial places to live and opportunities for him to partake in musical events. After an incident at a recital, Nathaniel lost his temper and threatened to kill Steve. Steve did not know what more he can do besides inviting Nathanial’s sister, Mary, to come speak with him. After a brief conversation between Mary and Nathanial, Nathanial apologized to Steve for the unkind words and threats he made towards him. At the end, the movie stated Nathanial is still a current resident of an organization called Lamp but continues to refuse medical treatment (Foster & Krasnoff, 2009).
