Resemblance of Native American myths of origin and Greek mythology and the Bible.
Origin myths deliver stories explaining how the world, humans or objects came to existence. Describing where the nation comes from, they are very important to the culture of given region. Therefore, each nation developed its own stories and beliefs; however, there are many similarities between myths of various religions and cultures. A good example would be Native American stories about origin and their resemblance to Greek mythology or to the Bible. Similarities can be seen in different spheres such as creation of humankind or even in the story about flood. In Salinan Indian Creation Story, there are resemblances both to Greek mythology and to the Bible. The myth says, “When the world was finished, there were as yet no people, but the Bald Eagle was the chief of the animals. He saw the world was incomplete and decided to make some human beings. So he took some clay and

According to the story, a giant monster was eating and drinking the blood of the village people. They held a meeting wondering how to solve this problem. One of the man traveled to the giant’s cave with a plan to kill the monster. He laid down in the middle of the path and pretended to play dead. Giant found him and eagerly carried the man home. When he left for a while and his son entered, the brave man grabbed the knife and threatened the boy. He told the boy to tell him where his father’s heart was or he would kill him. The boy said that it was in his left heel. The man waited for the giant to come home and when he finally did, the brave man plunged the knife into giant’s heel and killed him. Giant’s story is very similar to Achilles myth from Greek mythologies whose weak spot was also placed on his heel. Despite the great strength he had, an arrow that stabbed his heel killed
Every culture has its own past belief on how everything was created; Gods, lands, plants, animals, creatures, and humans all have a unique story to be told throughout the ages. But it is plain to see there is some overlap between ideas on how everything was made. Take the Greek Mythology, the most popular and well known type of mythos, has connections to other cultures like Nordic and Native American. But of course, each story has their own twist or other idea to it, as well.
One parallel between Greek and Egyptian creation stories is that they both begin with a God or Gods being created from the universe. The creation of
Greek mythology and Roman mythology both have an importance in both ancient history and the modern world. People often confuse the two and mistake them for each other. They may be similar on paper but they are very different. Greek mythology is more original, had a bigger influence on the ancient people, and has a bigger influence on the modern world.
After reading through quite a few myths from different cultures and parts of the world, I notice some similarities. For one, most of the myths center on some type of hero or god. Hercules, of the Greek myths, and Cuchulainn, of the Celtic Lands myths, for example, were both at least partly mortal heroes in their stories and are described as brave and strong. Each hero had battles to win and become insane in the myth that is told. The theme of animals is also popular among the myths I read. For instance, South America, which had Jaguar, the Master of Fire. Others include India, with the buffalo demon Mahisha and Africa’s Hare. Many times the animals are powerful and sometimes even a god. They also often are influenced by the culture, for the
There are many different types of stories, some fairy tales and some are origin myths. Within each story there are different things not seen by just reading the story and not thinking about the deeper meaning behind it. Such as in origin myths there are cultural characteristics. Cultural characteristics are the beliefs of a culture in which its society is based off of. These cultural characteristics can be seen as a blend of beliefs that tie the people to the land around them. This is very evident when looking at the creation stories of ingenious people. Each culture has different characteristics. For example the indigenous creation stories called “The Earth on Turtle’s Back”, “When Grizzlies Walked Upright”, and the Navajo origin legend; all have characteristics of the Native American culture. Such as the Native American cultural characteristics that you should respect animals, nature, and elders. Those cultural characteristics are very evident throughout the first two stories. The third creation story has different cultural characteristics.
With man and nature, there is seemingly a constant curiosity that of which compels many to contemplate questions and to ultimately seek answers for those questions. In modern day, man seeks science, logic, and mathematics to name a few in order to search for those compelling thoughts. However, it was seemingly not that easy in the era of the Ancient Greeks. The Ancient Greeks did feature mathematics, however, to explain natural phenomenon, there was not a reference to science and logic, and like other nations it was rather, mythology.
People come and go, but their work of art and ideas can flourish for eternity. Art makes history live forever. It opens up doors to the past and wisdom to the future. Existence in this world currently, no matter if it’s a person or a thing, is all result of the past. Stuff doesn’t just pop out of no where. History is part of everything. Everything is a part of history. One of Rome’s greatest philosopher, Marcus Tullius Cicero once said, “To be ignorant of what occurred before you were born is to remain always a child. For what is the worth of human life, unless it is woven into the life of our ancestors by the records of history.” Learn from the past and fail less.
Picture the Greek goddess Nike brave, muscular, and radiant. Who would have thought in a million years that one of the biggest brands in the world that sells footballs to underwear would be named after a Greek goddess? Greek Mythology has influenced our culture through company names, astronomy, and amazingly enough our government. One thing that all of these topics have in common is that over the thousands of years their meaning hasn’t changed.
Greek vs. Roman Mythology Mythology was a collection of stories told to teach lessons both practical and physiological. One enormous aspect of mythology was the world of gods, for both empires it was created to explain the world and what happened throughout it. They would use these in place of factual information to explain how everything worked. They assigned gods to different elements or events and then created sub gods or goddess’s to fill in the positions to further relate their world.
There are thousands of myths, fables, and legends that exist in the world today. The stories differ based on their origin and the storytellers over time. For example, the West African myth of Obatala and the Greek myth of Eros and Nyx both suggest alternative ways of how the world was created. There are many similarities and differences between the setting, characters, and culture of Greek and West African creation stories.
Mythology is the traditions that have been passed down orally, among a culture, for many generations. Myths can include several different elements, often varying slightly. Most include fantasy or unnatural characters, such as monsters, dragons, gods and goddesses. Myths generally tell a story which is the basis for many beliefs among a culture. Greek and Roman myths encompass the gods that the cultures worship. Myths often serve to teach a lesson or play on superstitions. The origin is unknown and because it has been handed down orally, there are variations in the story. The story often travels around to other cultures also. This leads to similar myths among cultures. Similar situations and characters
I have always been mesmerized with mythology whether Greek, Roman or Egyptian. Greek mythology is often compared to Roman mythology because they are the same gods just different forms. Some Roman Gods are borrowed from Greek mythology, often with different traits. For example Aphrodite the Greek Goddess of Love, Beauty, Pleasure, and Procreation. Her Roman equivalent is Venus the Roman Goddess of the same qualities, but Venus was also the Goddess of Prostitution and Victory. Another example is Ares the Greek God of War, he was often thought to be untamed and savage like. His counterpart is Mars who as the same attributes, but he is also the God of fertility. Egyptian mythology is more down to earth Ra or Ra the sun God. Isis the Goddess of
When looking at mythology in the eastern and western world one has to understand the different aspects that each mythology believed in. this aspect shows how the people who study this culture and believe in this culture have to do. This focuses on the aspects of individualism and cosmic law. The east follows cosmic law while the west normally follows individualism. Some examples are how in the Greek mythology they believe that everyone should be a hero in their own world and should try and best the heroes before them, which can be considered to be individualism, while in Indian culture they believe that they are all a hero and no one hero is better than the other or the person before them which follows the belief in the cosmic law of the universe.
There are many similarities between Greek and Roman mythology, and several differences. The Greeks built a great civilization and many temples to the Gods. They furthered the areas of poetry, art, philosophy, astronomy, architecture, and religion. When the Romans conquered Greece they adopted many aspects of their civilization, including their religion and myths. The Greeks built the foundation and the Romans made the myths their own. Their scholars and poets studied the works of the Greeks and preserved the myths for us to enjoy today.
Every culture is built on a myth. They help to answer the questions no one can fully understand. Myths are the foundation of everyone. Whether a myth is believed or not, it does not become any less prominent. Because there are so many, they tend to overlap and patterns are formed."How the World was Made," a myth from the Cheyenne culture, and the story of Adam and Eve are two myths about creation that are very similar and even more different.
