In the United States, striving for perfection and a great education for the students becomes a necessity. With all the other pressures found in society, high expectations of a standard education among students prevail, specifically hindering the chances of getting accepted into the dream college. Utilizing standardized tests as a tool to test the knowledge of students outlines only a small portion of an individual's performance and creativity. The environment of the situation, creates an immense amount of stressors, such as time limits, the anxieties of doing well, or the endless pressures that the test can determine a student's future. Each individual comes with vast amounts of different abilities in which a single test cannot possibly account for all. Although the tests attempt to provide an evaluation of the student’s test taking skills, many students are smart, but it simply doesn’t show on the test due to the unaccountable external forces. In other words, there is an avoidance of the external forces, which limits the student’s proficiency because only the standard reading, math, and writing become strictly tested upon. One external force which hinders performance is that standardized testing evaluates a student’s efficiency only on that particular day, which does not account for other performances throughout the student’s overall growth. In the United State there is a test called Standardized test, which comes in every level of education. Standardized test is any form of test in which all test takers are required to answer the same questions. This test is given in believe of that it will determine individual’s skill. This got introduced in the mid 1800 and ever since that, this has been one of the requirement educational background qualification. Standardized test has been an argumentative topic for a lot of people, some people think it is a good method of determining someone’s knowledge on courses. However there are people who think that standardized testing should not be the only way to measure student skills. This is not something we can conclude by just saying , we should take standardized test or we should not take standardized test, because not everyone think the same way. This topic is open to an individual perspective. This research will state both sides of standardised test, meaning will give both side information leaving the the decision to the reader whether students should take standardized test in the United states.
Standardized Testing is any form of a test that is scored in a standard manner which makes it easier to compare the relative performance of students. The different types of standardized tests included the SAT, which is the scholastic assessment test which is given out by the college board, and the ACT which is American College for Testing and is administered by the national admissions test (Lieberman). These types of tests help colleges pick which students to accept and which students to deny. As useful as they seem, they aren’t all that easy to do. For more than 50 years in the United States, standardized testing has been a “scourge to student life” and pressured students to do their best. Questions that are designed for standardized tests are based on finding an individual’s aptitude to determine how they can solve problems in the real world. With lurking opinions of whether standardized testing should continue to be enforced or abolished, standardized testing has made an impact to students around the country by setting an educational background.
I understand standardized testing is to know where a student educational level is at but it’s not right to make it worth a huge part of our grade. Many fear if they lower the percentage students are more likely to try less on the test but it could actually improve how well they do. It makes students feel worse about themselves because of the low score they received. Standardized testing is not worth the pressure it places on students.

Standardized tests measure only a small portion of what makes education meaningful, making them both inaccurate measures of collegiate success and detrimental to students’ educations as schools refocus their curricula on test preparation. Standardized tests don’t measure other important elements of a student. There is a countless amount of important characteristics that are not measured in standardized testing including “creativity, critical thinking, resilience, motivation, persistence, curiosity, endurance, reliability, enthusiasm, empathy, self-awareness, self-discipline, leadership, civic-mindedness, courage, compassion, resourcefulness, sense of beauty, sense of wonder, honesty, and integrity” (“Student Achievement”). Each and every one of these characteristics are extremely important for a person to have to live in the real world, which requires a person to think abstractly at times. The American College Testing, Inc. took the original test that was used by the United States Army and created a national test into the ACT that is widely used today. The results of increasing testing in the last several has not been entirely positive. Between 1963 and 1980 scores nationally dropped an excessive amount (29). Though these results were visible very early into the use of standardized testing, the results should not be thrown away completely. These results should be noted as which measurements work towards student growth. Standardized tests have been widely used in the United States dating all the way back to the early 1900s, and continue to grow in importance since their creation.
The Educational Testing Service (ETS) is an organization that aims to make exams to advance quality and equity in education. ETS considers the fact that standardized tests provide results for a student in several meaningful ways, one being to “inform decisions about which people should be selected for entrance to an educational institution” (ETS, “Purpose of Standardized Tests). This statement suggests that colleges understand the value of standardized tests and use exams as standards for indications of students’ successes in their college lives and beyond. Standardized tests. Tests are essential in gauging the growth of students, but the way they have become an issue in the past decade. The tests, the study materials, the graders, nearly everything relevant to passing on to the next grade is owned by almost all one private company; Pearson. They are notorious for having difficult tests that are almost impossible for students to understand in a stressful environment. They are also known for handing out a certain amounts of 3s, 4s, and 5s, (the grading scale of these tests) no matter what the students actually scored. The tests are standard, but the grading of them is not.

Students are put under so much stress from their homework it is becoming insufferable. Six in 10 school psychologists said the Common Core learning standards, which includes state exams for students in third through eighth grades each April, has increased students’ anxiety (Spector). Most parents and teachers don’t understand how much stress students are put under from school. Standardized testing needs to be abolished because students and educators spend too much time on the test, the stakes are too high, and the tests may not reveal everything about how much a student has learned.
Today, many hopeful high school students apply to his or her dream school. These students have solid GPAs, but not so great ACT and SAT test scores. So, these students have been rejected or wait-listed because their scores were not good enough for those dream colleges. People may say that colleges should not expect so much. However, the tests are very challenging. The test makers should not make the tests so difficult. Also, high schools do not prepare their students well enough. Acceptance to a good college is truly difficult; standardized tests should be recreated to truly demonstrate an applicant’s knowledge, and high schools should do a better job preparing students for the rigors of testing and college.

Terms that excite children and young adults everywhere and that sends them running to their shines for the Gods of Standardized Testing, thanking them for the creation for this testing system and this opportunity to be fairly and thoroughly evaluated. In America, the king of standardized tests SAT owns newspaper headings and has monopolized tutor centers. Any college or high school counselor will say the most important criteria for being admitted into good colleges includes “good grades”, “ a high GPA”, “extracurricular activities”, and most importantly “a high SAT score”. Many have taken advantage of the importance of the SAT, companies have released all types studying tools in the market, and have turned SAT preparation into a multi-billion dollar business.
Standardized tests are given to measure a student’s progress, but what defines the progress? Is it strictly the academics, or can you measure creativity with the scores too? A student’s academic progress should not be contained to what they learn for the test, but also what they learn in the classroom. Taking away valuable classroom time where students learn all types of material, not just reviewing for a standardized test, impacts their overall academic progress. Standardized tests are school exams that are published, they are “administered, scored, and interpreted in a standard manner- same directions, time limits, and scoring for all.” From my experience, I didn’t like to take standardized tests because I didn’t know what they were for.
