Year round education (YRE) is implemented in 436 U.S. school districts with very few complaints. In fact, school districts that have been participating in YRE and extended school days (ESD) are raving about the benefits in pupil's achievement level, their new found enthusiasm in learning, as well as the many programs that exist in the extended day promoting the decline in latch key children.
Some schools decided to initiate YRE and ESD because of swelling enrollments and lack of student achievement. There were many issues raised when deciding if YRE and ESD were a step in the right direction. By keeping the child in school on a year round schedule or ESD students will be less likely to loose information due to a long summer recess and have more time in a learning environment, therefore, enriching the child's learning abilities.
There are different types of YRE and ESD schedules. The most popular schedule is single-track and is usually implemented for the purpose of academic improvements. On a single-track schedule children attend school year round with frequent intersessions or breaks. Typical schedules might be 90-30, 60-20, or 45-15 where the first number indicates days of instruction and the second, days of vacations (Opheim, Mohahjer, Read, 1996). There is also a multi-track schedule, which is known to be more cost efficient. This schedule is often implemented when the school is overcrowded, in poor neighborhoods, as well as in inner-city schools. On a multi-track schedule students schedules are consistent with the single-track 90-30, 60-20, or 45-15, however, students are assigned to one of the several tracks which are staggered therefore, no one group of students has the same intersession at the same time. By staggering attendance schedules, class size is deducted. Studies have concluded that decreased class size promotes more efficient learning.
Another important advantage for many school districts is that year-round school can enable multi-track schedules. A multi-track schedule is one in which teachers and students are divided into equally sized groups called tracks (Gerard 1). In 1992, parents of a possible pilot school were surveyed on their thoughts. 59% of the parents responded. There was an overwhelming amount of rejection. Just 10% of those surveyed favored YRE where 83% were against (Sardo-Brown, Deborah, and Michael Rooney 1).
When a person first mentions the idea of year-round schooling, their comment is usually met with a look of dread. The image of year-round schooling is that students must go to school every day throughout the entire year with no breaks. This is an untrue image. Industries such as business and medicine depend on extreme methods and forward thinking ideas. To be a successful enterprise, one must be willing to take risks and try new things. Within the last century, education has attempted to take a leap of faith by completely flipping the traditional school schedule and idea of summer vacation upside down. Just as with any idea, there are advantages and disadvantages as well as supporters and opponents. Each district must look at their own individual needs and evaluate the trials from schools that have gone before them to decide if year-round schooling would benefit their school.
Does year round school truly have a positive impact in the lives of students? Various studies do suggest that year round school is helpful. There are some disadvantages to this type of schooling that are preventing all schools from switching to this type of scheduling. In earlier times schools were only teaching throughout half of the year so that school would be out of session when it was time to work in the fields. The report reflected growing concern about how the school calendar relates to students at risk for academic failure” (Cooper, Nye, Charlton, James, & Greathouse). As a result. many are fighting for year-round school. Year-round school has proven to be beneficial in the lives of students and has lead to greater success in the classroom. Although, there are some downfalls to year-round schooling.
For students that take place in extracurricular activities, the year-round schedule would mess with after school practices or competitions. The school could work with the surrounding community to get activities

Year-round schools follow the basic 180 day school year, but the days are more spread out throughout the year following the 45-15 method. Forty five days of school, followed by fifteen day breaks. Since this is a controversial school schedule due to the shorter summer break, each school system should have a string of schools (elementary, middle, and high school) try the schedule out for five-years and track the improvement throughout the years. Teachers no longer feel as if they are on the edge of a breakdown because of the new system. Since the teachers and students are in school for nine weeks have a week of break, they can know look forward to up to two or three weeks of break. With the cut down on the summer break to add to the other breaks throughout the year, students have a better chance of retaining knowledge. It would be beneficial for schools to switch to the year-round school schedule because the teachers are happier and not on the verge of a breakdown, the breaks are longer, and the students retain the knowledge from the previous

It's no secret that majority of people today attend school. The goal of getting an education is to become well rounded and knowledgeable in all subjects, which helps us receive a quality job and have a stable future. But if students are not getting these attributes out of school, then it is time for a change. To solve this problem, I propose year-round schooling. Year-round schooling would improve students' education and schools' functionality.

While each of these six reasons were valid in the 1900’s, they no longer holds the sway that they once did. While reason one was to standardize the schools, this is still a very valid reason a standardize school schedule should be maintained and adjusted to a year around school. Looking back at the second and fifth reasons we transitioned, teachers are now required to attend college, which limits the need for additional educational needs that the old schoolmasters once needed. Year-Round School Year-round school is having school all year round instead of having a summer break. If we had year-round school, people wouldn’t lose what they learned over summer break. The teachers wouldn’t have to re-teach the things they did before. Then the students could graduate faster if we didn’t have summer vacation (Morin). Some bad parts about year-round school is some parents are not going to leave their child home alone if they go on vacation during the summer, so the child could miss school.
