An Expected Expository Essay
The book “The Hobbit” has a diverse set of characters. From the dwarves and elves to goblins and werewolves, there’s always someone different from another. This story takes place in a land where are dragon purloined treasure and the main characters try to redeem their treasure. Three significant characters in the book are Gollum, Gandalf, and Thorin. Gollum plays the role of the threshold guardian, Gandalf as the mentor, and Thorin takes the role of the trickster. One character, Gollum, acts the role of the threshold guardian of the book. He keeps the hero, Bilbo Baggins, from continuing on on his journey in the special world. He provides tests to prove Bilbo Baggin’s worth. To back this up, on page 81 of the …show more content…

Characters like this often start as the hero’s sidekick, then they switch roles mid-story, usually around the climax. Trickster Thorin is Bilbo’s sidekick at the beginning, and after Smaug’s death turns over to greed. When Thorin sided with Bilbo, he offered encouragement such as, “‘ Don’t you worry!’ said Thorin. ‘It will get lighter all too soon.’ “ (Tolkien, page 150, The Hobbit) and, “‘ You are very gloomy, Mr. Baggins!’ said Thorin. ‘Why has not Smaug blocked the lower end, then, if he is so eager to keep us out? He has not, or we should have heard him.” (Tolkien, page 249, The Hobbit) A good fellow he has, for he was able to keep everybody motivated and optimistic. There are not too many times that Thorin felt hopeless. But, after Smaug’s demise, Thorin became egotistical, always trying to find the Arkenstone. An example of this happens on page 286, when Thorin declares, “‘The price of the goods and the assistance that we received of the Lake-men we will fairly pay in due time. But nothing we will give, note even a loaf’s worth, under threat or force.’” (Tolkien, page 286, The Hobbit) Selfish, Thorin is, for he acknowledges that the Lake-men need to be paid, but he does not give a single
