In the essay “The Believing Game” by Peter Elbow, he discusses the concepts of taking the emotion out of arguments and using logic by seeing another person’s opinion or ideology through their eyes. Elbow uses “The Doubting Game” as his counter-argument in the essay and speaks of how most humans are naturally conditioned to over-analyze any argument that is presented before them. Elbow, while making some insightful points to the way humans think, presents his essay with too much emotion and bias. Morality is not considered in his essay and Elbow is not presenting the realistic way most people think or argue.

In contrast to the conversations of Becca and Stan, usually presented as straight dialogue, the discussions among the three sisters are conventionally presented, often with “she said” and other interpolations to give explicitly the emotional level of the sister’s disagreements. Madga, the Polish student who acts as Becca’s guide to the death camp site speaks fluent English but at times awkward English “Oh, they are much in appreciation” she says when given a pair of jeans. Contrast between the formal, traditional language of the fairy tale and childish, informal chatter is shown when the children comment or question as Gemma proceeds with her Briar Rose fairy tale story telling. Her contrast revisiting of just this one fairy tale shows the reader that while her conscious memory has buries the details of her past horrors, she cannot help returning to the fairy tale allegory. After being crushed with deep sorrow over the death of his beloved Ligeia, the narrator moves into a decaying abbey to leave behind his lonesome house. Although he leaves the exterior of the house untouched, the narrator decorates the interior with strange but lavish furniture. “The furnishings take on the shapes and colors of his fantastic dreams” as he attempts to cope with his loss (Kincheloe). This supports the idea that the narrator would rather live in his own colorful fantasy (like the inside of his house), than engage in the dark reality (as represented by the outside of the house). Losing Ligeia meant the narrator lost his fulfillment in life; which is why his reality is now gloomy and undesirable. Not only does is the furniture an example of dream imagery, the walls of the desolate house also have a dream effect. The moving images on the walls cause the house itself to seem restless and alive. The narrator imagines this because it represents himself; always on the edge of monstrosity with each changing mood. As he hallucinates on opium, his sense of reality and fantasy is put together as one. With each furnishing, a looming memory of Ligeia haunts him as he reminances her during his opium dreams.

Period.” It is the morals that humans are born and raised with that create the civilized beings they are. However, what is taught can be lost in the dysfunctional world we live in today. The short story “The Most Dangerous Game,” by Richard Connell, and the classic novel Lord of the Flies written by William Golding, both display the uncivilized nature of mankind and the rash decisions that may happen as a result. Connell’s story begins in the ocean off the coast of Brazil, with a pair of hunters having a conversation, this conversation is short lived, as Sanger Rainsford, the main protagonist falls off the boat and swims to a mysterious Island for safety. Similarly, in Goldings’ Lord of the Flies, school boys between the ages of six and twelve crash onto an island in the Pacific, left to fend for themselves. This occurs when their plane crashes after being shot down. Despite the texts being set in different time periods, the authors express a common and universal theme: the regression of humankind may eventually lead to rash decisions and violence. The epiphany of this shared theme will be compared and contrasted through the troubled antagonists, the descriptive settings, and the distinct symbols used in each text.

By the age of sixteen he had become the editor of the Poughkeepsie News-Press. Connell was a very smart man who studied at Georgetown and Harvard.While at Harvard he was the editorial chairman. Connell 's writing style was usually action-adventure. Some of his works were probably inspired from his time working as a homicide journalist, and serving in World War I. By the time Connell passed away he had published over 300 short stories. Richard Connell was a very unique author from experiences he had through out his life, and so was the writing style that he portrayed.

Appropriately, it is a suspense-driven work and relies heavily on the use of certain techniques to make sure the reader feels, or at least understands, the terror that the protagonist Sanger Rainsford feels. In the narrative, two techniques are combined to create suspense: careful use of foreshadowing creates unease, while prolongation when describing critical moments and events causes tension for the reader.
