Matrix and Mindscan: Are AI’s Human or a Hoax? Since the beginning of humanity, people have disputed over the standards of what qualifies as a human being. In ancient Rome, the Romans persecuted and enslaved those of conquered states. In WWII Hitler slaughtered thousands of Jews. In the primary stages of America’s founding, rich white plantation owners imported black slaves to cultivate their fields. All of these types of persecution occurred because a greater, more powerful group considered the other as insubordinate. The commanding power was indifferent to the population they oppressed because they did not consider the subservient group as human. Now that technology is progressing, the definition of humanity is again called into question as the fine lines between humanity and artificial intelligence (AI) have blurred into an area of controversy. Questions such as what characteristics define being human, what is a personal identity, and can AI’s ever be considered human are only a few questions addressed by Mindscan and The Matrix. Using Richard Sawyer’s novel Mindscan, and the movie The Matrix, I will discuss my personal views on what defines humanity and whether or not the characters in the above works meet these criteria. Many conditions must be met in order for a being to be human, including: the ability to tell right from wrong, learn from experiences, think independently, a biological body, ability to be aware they are self-aware, complex emotional feeling, and a
Dictionary.com defines human being as “a person, especially as distinguished from other animals or as representing the human species. This means anyone who has a human body can be a human being. In the book The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary E Pearson, Jenna Fox is a 17 year old girl who just woke up from a coma and has no clue who she is. She moved from Boston to California with her family because her family did something illegal. When Jenna was in Boston she got in a car crash with her friends Locke and Kara who died. In order to bring Jenna back to life, her father performed a procedure using biogel so that she would have 10% of her brain back but could not remember what happened. Towards the end of the story, Jenna meets Ethan who
Last night, I watched ‘The Matrix’ for the first time and that movie plays a perfectly role in the question, “what it is to be human.” Think about a world that is unreal, how would we even know if the world we live in is unreal? What if we are all in a virtual world that makes our brain think we are actually doing something? As of right now, I am typing a paper for my English 212 class at Saginaw Valley State University; in the Matrix this is what you should be thinking. If you see it, smell it, and feel it; it must be real. However, not according to the Matrix; how deep does the rabbit hole go?
When someone brings up the term “artificial intelligence”, a variety of connotations tend to arise, connotations that often are unfair or unrepresentative of the true real-world applications of such a term. Due to the incidentally fear-mongering nature of the media, artificial intelligence can refer to something as basic as a robotic arm in a factory, as well as the implied extinction and/or enslavement of the human race as caused by robo-revolution. As of today, however, when applied in the world of modern technology, artificial intelligence is defined as any innovation that performs a task usually completed by humans. Of course, with this definition, artificial intelligence holds the potential for both societal harm and benefit, and its fate
So far I assert that an individual who has personhood may not be a human beings or a human being may not have personhood, the individual could be another species, or even beyond existence. This means some human beings in biological definition are not essentially a person. For example, hydatidiform mole, anencephalic, Siamese twins, even fetus-in-fetu, or some fetuses develop to a certain stage but discontinue, and even some patient in brain-dead state(unlike vegetative), all of them can be known biologically as human beings, but they would not be considered as a person since they do not have rational.
Warren criteria of personhood is cognitive. According to Warren, beings must have the following to be persons: Consciousness (of objects and events external and/or internal to the being), and the capacity to feel pain; Reasoning (the developed capacity to solve new and relatively complex problems), and self motivated activity, and communication. She further argued that if 1.If X fails to meet all five conditions on personhood, then X is not a person. 2.The fetus fails to meet all five conditions on personhood. Therefore 3. The fetus is not a person.
Hasker’s criteria for a being to be sentient include intelligence, self-awareness and consciousness. I feel these are adequate basis to start. Other properties or characteristics that could be beneficial are morality, and spirituality. God is our identity and creator that leads us. We have a soul which was created by God that gives us life after death. The Mind/Body Solutions dualist mentions that it is the most influential because it was developed by Christians. It recognizes God and our soul is involved.
To be human is to be a person in relationship with others and to live in community.
When humans created artificial intelligence, the machines believed they were superior than humans and rebelled. They survived by imprisoning the humans, thus believing that their lifestyle and culture was superior to the humans. This “slavery” of the humans is similar to the slavery that happened in the nineteenth century, where some people believed they were superior to others. Once the machines in the movie believed they did not need to labor to the humans.
Through the eyes of Cicero, John Locke and Malcolm X one can see what it means to be human. It is not easy to define the traits and abilities that make us human. How would you respond if you were asked, what makes you human?
Even some of the most recent works of science fiction such as Spike Jonze’s 2013 film Her have continued to grapple with understanding the human identity as technology and the world have continued to progress and many of the speculated technological advancements of the past have been realized. Through the exaggeration of the artificially intelligent technology developing today, Jonze aims to completely reimagine what it means to be human in the modern world by exploring whether or not these physically intangible forces can be regarded as human. This challenge is initially introduced following Theo’s purchase of the OS1 artificially intelligent operating system. Soon after he has installed his OS1, which names itself Samantha, he inquires how
• The criteria of personhood is necessary to specify what we mean by a person.
What does it mean to be human? In the society that we live in today there is a wide variety of definitions that sometimes the truth becomes blurry and it takes an epiphany to change our perceptions. Being able to feel pain, sorrow, happiness, joy, sympathy, and love. These are the traits that we should all be striving for. As humans, we should all be striving to become better people. We as humans want to grow as individuals. We focus a large amount on ourselves to become better people. We enjoy seeing ourselves succeed in life. It is a great accomplishment when you have witnessed yourself accomplish something. When goals are reached, we praise ourselves. Humans enjoy feeling good about themselves, and growing as humans helps us with this great feeling because we have reached our goal. Just being alive doesn’t mean we are truly living. This is what separates the humans from creatures. This is the case in
What’s the first thing you think of when someone says, “Artificial Intelligence”? The Terminator? Perhaps the Matrix trilogy? Ever since the inception of the computer, science fiction has brought us scenes of super-intelligent computers who want to take over all of mankind. In reality, Artificial Intelligence is still in it’s infancy, and has done much more good for humans than bad. Over time, people’s perspective of AI has changed drastically. We have gone from thinking that AI will take over the world and obliterate mankind to thinking about all the benefits we can get from AI. The change in people’s perspective lately towards a more positive view of AI has boosted the production, sales, and advancement of home automation and AI, making
To be human is to be able think and learn without any restraints. To have an opinion all to one's self even if it my clash with someone else's. To be human is to have emotion. One must be able to smile, cry, laugh or shout without living in fear of the consequence. One must
There are many different meanings to being human. Being human means being a mundane that tries to make sense of its spiritual existence. We are not human, we are simply being human. If we were not to be born as humans, we may have been born as animals. In Book I of Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle introduces his argument by distinguishing between two types of ends which human beings strive for. He states, “For the end is sometimes an activity, sometimes a product beyond the activity; and when there is an end beyond the action, the product is by nature better than the activity” (1).
