Books have the power to to influence and change one’s life forever; it gives them hope and courageousness in any situation. In Ray Bradbury’s dystopian novel, Fahrenheit 451, a man named Montag wants to find the truth. In a society where books are against the law, Montag-,with the help of a few others, discovers the true beauty behind books. The theme of the power of books is shown when the lady voluntarily dies for books, when Faber and Montag create a plan against the firemen, and the hobos’ telling of their life stories. When Montag and Faber devise a plan against the firemen, their hope to save books makes them brave enough to rebel.When Montag and Faber are creating the plan, Faber suggest that, “‘we print extra books and arrange to have them hidden in firemen’s houses all over the country, so that seeds of suspicion would be sown among these arsonists…’” (Bradbury 81). Montag and Faber know that this will be a risky plan to execute, but if done correctly this burning would temporarily or permanently halt the burning of books. This need to stop the destruction of books fuels a fire of courage in their hearts to take action, showing how the power of books gives one the bravery to take a risk. After Montag and Faber finalize this plan, they try to decide who will help them set the fire,commenting, “ ‘Oh, there are many actors alone who haven’t acted Pirandello or Shaw or Shakespeare for years… we could use their anger.’” (Bradbury 83).
