In the article The Serial Killer Phenomenon Richard Whittington-Egan aims to explain what exactly a serial killer is by giving an in-depth evaluation on how a serial killer differs from a mass murderer, or a psychopath. Whittington-Egan breaks down and showcases the defining characteristics of a serial kill with the help of numerous cases of evidence which confirms the accuracy of each statement. Characteristics such as narrowed age, race, and typically being a loner with difficulty with relationships are talked about. The article concludes by examining the future of this phenomenon, what has been done, and most importantly, how difficult it will be to solve such an unpredictable behavior. The author shows the readers a look into a serial killer, inside and out, appearance and mind. All points made within the article are backed by some type of evidence either immediately after or throughout the piece, leaving no real room for judgement or bias. Although the amount of evidence given throughout the article overwhelmed the article in a sense, the large amount of example given to back every point takes away from the impression left on the reader. I think the same effect could be left on a reader by using a portion of the examples used in this piece. Whittington-Egan does a good job at addressing a common misconception made about serial killers and their motives. When he compares and contrast a serial killer to both a mass murder and psychopath eliminates the argument of such a common misconception that they could be the same, since often many put these in the same grouping. As someone who hasn't really studied any type of mass killings, it's hard for me to disagree with any of what Whittington-Egan has written, and with the high level of evidence to prove these points I must believe it is
