I found in the play “Leaving Home” that I could find the use of pathos in various spots. I noticed the definition “an expression or utterance that evokes sadness or sympathy, esp. in a work of literature; a description, passage, or scene of this nature” more than the others. In this text, I could really see the use of pathos being used by the emotionally-loaded language, the emotional examples, the figurative language, and the emotional tone. The actors had a lot going on in just the short time of the play. In “Leaving Home” I could really see emotionally - loaded language a lot throughout the play. When Kathy said “I had a miscarriage…” that had to of been very tough for her to mention even as being an actress, that was one of the hardest lines to possibly read (French 33). Especially after having Bill asking her all the questions like; if he did something or if she is mad at him. But I am very impressed that she tried to put if off as much as she did even though she knew she would have to tell him sooner or later. I feel that she was not very smart for asking Bill if they would still get married if it was not for the baby because that could lead to many more issues. There were a couple vivid descriptions in the play that I noticed. For example, the biggest one I remember of is when Jacob went to tear up Ben’s diploma. I found that very vivid because the play says “… Then he notices the diploma lying on the table. He grabs it. … He just stares at his father, who stares
An example in Danielle speech is “We got so geeked-out on making WALL-E this convincing robot, that we made his binoculars practically optically perfect.” I think this is a great way to use pathos because, for one thing, it made the audience laugh. Another thing is that she connected it with what she was talking about. At this point in the TED talk, she is talking about how they use lighting to make the characters stand out. Throughout her speech, she uses pathos to engage the audience. To help explain what she is talking about without boring people. She used pathos so they could be
Within The Glass Castle, Jeannette Walls uses the rhetorical device pathos to help connect with her readers and make it so they can better comprehend her story and the difficulties she often had to deal with. “Mom said Dad was never the same after Mary Charlene died. He started having dark moods, staying out late and coming home drunk and losing jobs (Walls,28)”. This passage is a prime example of pathos seeing
Pathos is used in order to link the essay with the reader’s emotions and ethos is used to show the writers moral character. For example, pathos is used when Kozol speaks to a student of a Bronx high school, “Think of it this way,” said a sixteen-year-old girl. “If people in New York woke up one day and learned that we were gone…how would they feel?...I think they’d be relieved.” (Kozol 205) This part of the essay really made me feel sad for this girl who lives in a society where she has grown up feeling like now one cares about her or others of her race.
Pathos is to get peoples attention and draw them into to what they are reading to keep
Pathos appeals to the reader’s emotions by using emotional stories and imagery. Pathos strategies are often used to grab and hold the reader’s attention. Emotional or personal stories give the reader an opportunity to emotionally relate to the story, and allows them to be emotionally connected. An emotionally connected reader is more interested in the story that a reader who is not emotionally connected.
Another time Bradbury used pathos, was when we Guy goes to his wife and tells her about the books he has been keeping and she has a breakdown. The fire chief Beatty had come to their house because Guy had not been at work, and the chief wanted to check on him. While he was there Mildred found a book behind his pillow and almost ratted him out. Guy realized what was happening and got Beatty to leave. When he was gone, Guy revealed he had been storing books inside the vents in the house, he had about 20 books. Mildred freaks out wants to turn him in but he told her to wait that he would get rid of them if she gave him
Pathos is an emotional appeal in which the advertisers hope that the consumers will allow their claim. Say for instance most people will notice a puppy behind what looks like to be a rusty cage. Seeing a cage like that, makes some wonder how bad the conditions are that the puppy is living in. then there is the puppy who

Pathos is used very effectively in Seth Davis’s article. By using pathos he is helping to expose the purpose of the article in a way that you wouldn’t think of before. Davis states “As the father of three children under the age of eight, I can only pray that someone “exploits” my sons someday
In Atticus’ argument he also uses pathos. One example of when he uses pathos is when he states “I have nothing but pity in my heart for the chief witness
ii. Topic Sentence – Pathos is referred to as the literature’s emotional appeal to the audience’s senses or imagination.

Pathos consists in arousing the emotions of the listeners and directing those emotions in an action that should be taken. In order to use pathos in my speech, I could reference personal experiences. For example if I were having a conversation with someone who just lost a family member, I could make a connection with them by telling them about a similar loss in my
Pathos, according to merriam-webster.com, is defined as “an element in experience or in artistic representation evoking pity or compassion”. The Rich Brother uses this appeal to grasp the heart strings of its audience; to have compassion and/or pity towards the brothers. As author Tobias Wolff states in this piece, “Do you remember when you used to try to kill me? ...Is that strange or what? I was afraid that you’d get mad if you found out that I knew you were trying to kill me” (328-329). In this quote Tobias Wolff, a short story author, makes
My research paper is based around the topic of compassion in medicine, so basically every section of my paper will have some element of pathos. However, the strongest point of the pathos argument will be in the effects of a lack of compassion on the patients and the health care providers. I believe the pathos of my paper will make the readers put themselves into the my paper, my making the see the argument through the lens of health care providers or the
