Theme and Style in Taylor Swift Song “Blank Space”
2015 Award winning Song of the Year “Blank Space” by Taylor Swift is a song about how she has met and fell in love with so many guys that now Swift thinks she has finally met “the one”. Swift then spends tons of time with him and at the time they seemed to be happy, Swift discovers him texting another girl and their relationship goes “down in flames (line 17)”. Swift uses many literary analyses in her song, two in which are theme and style. Three possible themes for this song is to have “blank space (line 30)” between guys and herself, boys are nothing but trouble, all they want is "love if it's torture (line 63)", and she is ready for a mistake, but would rather not have one again. Then the way Swift uses style is by having figurative images, recurrent images, and symbols in her song. The way Swift uses the two literary analyses theme and style helps send the overall message to her fans who are listening.
Theme is the overall meaning of the story or in other words the central idea. One theme of this piece is to stay away from guys or in her words have a “blank space (line 30)” from them. Just by listening to her song the audience can interpret that she had experience with past ex-boyfriends. Swift even stated in the song “but I’ve got a blank space, baby and I’ll write your name (line 30)”, which is referring to staying away from guys and she is ready for the right one. The way the composer gets her point across is by give hints. One example of a hint is when she expressed the fact she had a boyfriend before. The composer quotes “nice to meet you, where have you been (line 1)?” describing that she been waiting for another guy to show, but hopefully this time the right one. This is one of the three themes that is possible for Swift's song.
Swift seems to believe that guys are just too much trouble to deal with. This is another theme Swift proves in her song. One evidence shown to prove this is the quote "boys only want love if it's torture (line 63)" this explains that guys are self centered. The fans can already interpret that Swift had history with other guys so this is to show what she has learned in those experiences of boyfriends. In the line right after
When the opening track from Taylor Swift’s album 1989 blares through my room my whole body electrifies with sound of pure creativity. The album cover is showered with Swift’s recognizable handwriting over a polaroid showing a timeless sweatshirt, most likely from the 80’s. Inside is filled with Swift’s crisp voice singing brilliantly written hooks about everything from love to insecurities to finding yourself in a world that has already defined you.In 1989, Swift somehow found a way to take her creativity to the next level, and since my brain tends to be a creative mess with ideas bubbling through constantly I fell in love with the uniqueness that flows from the speakers when I plug in 1989. As a creative person myself, listening to something
A theme is the author’s underlying message that is expressed in more one word. Some themes can be very similar to each other, an example of this is the two documents I will comparing in this analysis essay; The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton and On the sidewalk Bleeding by Evan Hunter. These two stories share similar themes, Don’t judge someone by what they look like, get to know them before you determine their fate. However the authors portray this theme in a different way. One story depicts a young boy who goes through troublesome events in his life before he realizes the moral of his life.
Theme is the message of the story that the author wants the reader to take away from the story. In the short story “Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto. The theme is don’t pretend to be someone you are not. For example, Mr.Bueller remembers his story about how he tried to impress his girlfriend by renting different cars every time they had a date. This led to him to running out of money. He pretended to be someone he was not. Victor also tried to be someone he was not by pretending to know how to speak French fluently to impress his crush, Teresa. Luckily, no one pointed out that VIctor didn’t know French, so he wasn’t embarrassed in front of the whole class, including Teresa.
Taylor Swift likes to invoke a lot of emotion into her music and includes several things she has experienced in her life. One major recurring theme in her songs is love.
Taylor Swift also had set 1989 secret session and promote and meet her fans(Randy Lewis). Taylor Swift has also try's to reblog and tweet her fans as much as possible. Her fans can relate to her lyrics like she is speaking to them."Someday I'll be big enough so you wont hit me and all your ever gonna be is mean" Taylor swift lyric from mean. Which she is telling her fans that even though someone picking on you, its okay one day you will be bigger than them. Her lyrics are inspiring and motivating, but of course you will have people who say "all she does is writes about her exes" .This is not
A theme is the meaning behind a story, occasionally defined as the moral of the story. Themes can differ from one end of the world to the other, as it does in many books. The Droughtlanders by Carrie Mac is a futuristic version of the world which has been divided into two parts. The rich and the poor, the healthy and the sick, otherwise known as Keyland and Droughtland. Keyland is where all the rich people with extravagant lands and lives live. Droughtland is a disease-ridden land where all poor people are being forced to live. Society treats Droughtland poorly and they decide to take action. Thus starting the revolution. Carrie Mac portrays many themes in different ways throughout the book. However the major theme the book revolves around is that; No matter how rich or poor a person is, or what gender, race, or sexuality they are, in the end, they are all the same and deserve to be treated equally. In addition, the book shows that when everyone is treated equally there is so much more that everyone can accomplish. The theme is being portrayed through the narrative point of view, setting and atmosphere, and character development.
Theme is the subject of talk, a topic, or morals that the author is trying to get across to the readers. When reading an excerpt, the theme is not directly stated in the text, so you must dig deeper into the context to understand the morals the author is trying to portray. In both Angela's Ashes and The Street, we can detect a similar theme of struggling to get through life’s obstacles. When reading the two different stories, we can further pick out the theme by using character, events, and the setting.
Taylor Swift, a pop icon and polarizing figure, is often known for her empowering music, feminist attitude, and meaningful lyrics. Many of her fans praise the feminist messages some of her songs deliver, however others say she comes from a position of privilege and only advocates for white women. Still, a common perception of Swift is that she has evolved from an innocent country singer into a more controversial and sometimes provocative pop singer. What is ignored though, is that despite this perception, themes depicted in “old” Taylor’s music still displayed highly problematic concepts about gender, just in less obvious ways. Particularly in her music video for “You Belong With Me,” the audience if presented with a fulfilling love story involving a nerdy girl getting the popular. On its surface, this concept may seem normal, but the narrative of this video unintentionally conveys significant gender issues in today’s society. Thus, through her 2008 music video for “You Belong With Me,” Taylor Swift ironically presents herself as the ideal nerdy girl next door who gets the guy when she suddenly turns beautiful while demonizing a cheerleader, revealing problematic notions of how women are supposed to look and behave in society, as well as reinforcing negative female stereotypes.
Theme. A lesson in a novel or story that is not directly stated in the book. Between the excerpts Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt and The Street by Ann Petry is a common theme. The theme that desperate times call for desperate measures.
Or perhaps the real artist, Taylor Swift’s purpose is to show the audience how ridiculous is the media image that has been created on her. It is a warning for both boys and girls, primarily those who are hoping to attract love from boys that love is perpetuated by its tortuousness. It is painful if boys will lose interest, that is Swift’s warning. The song revolves around a message for girls: do not be a daydream dressed like a daydream; do not be a nightmare dressed like a nightmare; do not find out what kind of a girl he wants and be like that forever, do not be heaven, do not be nice, do not be magic, never be too plain or perfect and good. You can also add torture to love and bring darkness to light, it is all about the
Thesis statement: Taylor Swift is one of the most successful female artists in the world who portrays her personal experiences through her music.
The theme is how when you have a tough, important moment in life, you have to make the best of it and move along. An image for these lyrics will help you connect to the theme because you can see what is going on and a picture will help you understand something more. In my next paragraph, I will be talking about how the singers used repetition to emphasize certain points.
The lyrics can make one happy, confused, or relate to Swift’s situation. This appeal to pathos is used in different ways here. Whenever one sees the scene with Swift holding the cat, it forces them to emote and feel terrible or sad for the cat because it is adorable and by extension for the person holding it. Also, Swift sums up all that has been said about her in one climatic boy crazy video. The video’s setting resembles that of a fairy tale where all is well, but then Swift goes into a fit of anger after her supposed one true love hurts her. Throughout her video, she tries to tell young women that boys are dumb and can break their hearts to the point that they go crazy after a breakup and that is okay as long as they do not go
The theme of a story is whatever general idea or insight the entire story reveals (Kennedy and Goia). In “The Story of an Hour”, by Kate Chopin, the theme is repression and freedom. In “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker, the theme of the story is being proud of your heritage or your background. In “The Storm”, by Kate Chopin, the theme is finding happiness or comfort in other things.
In musical superstar Taylor Swift’s music video for her song “Blank Space,” she is portraying herself as the high maintenance and dramatic girlfriend that the media believes she is. The speaker of this text is the media’s perception of Taylor Swift and her message is about the disconnect between who Swift really is and who the media sees her as. I believe Swift has two purposes for this music video. One is for her character in the music video to warn her audience about the type of love that boys want, and the other for real life Taylor herself to poke holes into the media’s concept of her love life. The video is filled with satire and paradoxes to convince us that our idea of Taylor Swift is not an accurate opinion of her.
