Months into his presidency, hurricane San Zenon killed 2,000 people in the capital city of Santo Domingo. It took six years for Trujillo to rebuild the capital city. He later renamed it "Cuidad Trujillo". Trujillo did improve the country for the better at some point in his dictatorship. He reduced foreign debt, improved sanitation, constructed new roads, schools, hospitals and increased the general standard of living.
Trujillo was obviously not a good president. He disproportionately increased economic prosperity to his family, supporters and military personnel. It only became worse when he established a secret group of spies that threatened, tortured and killed protesters, portraying it as an accident or suicide. He killed many

There were many underground protests that were immediately suppressed just like the case in which the three revolutionary Mirabal sisters were killed by Trujillo's henchmen in a planned car accident in 1960. However, on May 30th, 1961, Rafael Trujillo was ambushed while on his way home in his car. The Dominicans were finally free from the 31-year dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. The capital city later changed its name back to Santo Domingo. The country struggled to establish a democracy after the death of Trujillo. In 1965, 30,000 US troops invaded the Dominican Republic in fear of the country turning into a second Cuba. From 1966 to 1994, lawyer, historian and former president, Joaquin Balaguer, dominated the political life of the republic up until his death. He looked up to Trujillo during his many weary years of presidency. In 1990, Dominicans were fleeing to the states after struggling in the country. The United States established diplomatic relations with the Dominican in 1884 following its independence from Spain. They are not run by a dictatorship, but through a democracy. They have a Representative Democracy government, which means that all eligible citizens vote on representatives to pass laws for them. The government has about 61% control over the economy down there. Their form of government is a lot like the United States. They have three branches (executive, legislative and judicial) of government and the court is in charge of actions against the President, designated members of his cabinet, and members of Congress.
Alvarez shows many different ways a dictator affects both politics and daily life. People were afraid to say Trujillo’s name in an uncomplimentary way in fear of the consequences if someone were to hear and it get back to him. Cruel right, but that is what happened when you messed with Trujillo. She also shows the sisters religions throughout the book, mainly Patria’s. Patria is the most religious sister and goes through the most

Trujillo demonstrates his antagonism through his unrelenting violations of human rights in the Dominican Republic during the mid-twentieth century. He was quite notorious for taking young women away from their families, and, if they did not comply, killing them and their families. Basically, he destroyed everything that stood in his way by killing every last
In fact, the night Bolivar became the dictator of Gran Colombia, he barely escaped assassination.
