I. Introduction 1. Background of the Corporation "Seattle teens Jim Casey and Claude Ryan started American Messenger Company, a phone message service, in 1907. They were soon making small‑parcel deliveries for local department stores and in 1913 changed the company's name to Merchants Parcel Delivery. In 1915 Casey, who led the company for the next 47 years, established a policy of manager ownership, and Charlie Soderstrom chose the brown paint still used on the company's vehicles. Service expanded outside Seattle in 1919 when Merchants Parcel bought Oakland, California‑based Motor Parcel Delivery. It is a stand-out expression of the company's purpose and it is extremely important. The nine main components of a Mission Statement are all covered in UPS' statement and they are as follows: Customers - offering excellence and value in everything they do (P1) Products or Services - meeting the various needs of the customers (i.e. logistics, distribution, commerce etc.) (P1) Markets - distribution, logistics and commerce needs worldwide (P1) Technology - Concern for Survival, Growth and Profitability - sustain a financially strong company, serve the "evolving" needs of the customers (P2) Philosophy - fulfilling the promises to the customer (Intro) Self-Concept - caring and responsible corporate citizen, responsible and well-regarded employer, financially strong company (P2, P3. P4) Concern for Public Image - caring and responsible corporate citizen (P4) Concern for Employees - broad employee ownership, opportunity for advancement
