The bank’s American Depository Shares are listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the symbol “HDB”.
Times Bank Amalgamation
In a milestone transaction in the Indian banking industry. Times Bank Limited (another new private sector bank promoted by Bennett, Coleman & Co./Times Group) was merged with HDFC Bank Ltd., on February 26-2000. As per the scheme of amalgamation approved by the shareholders of both banks and the Reserve Bank of India, shareholders of Times Bank received 1 share of HDFC Bank for every 5.75 shares of Times Bank. The amalgamation added significant value of HDFC Bank in terms of increased branch network, expanded geographic reach, enhanced customer base, skilled manpower and the opportunity to cross-sell and leverage alternative delivery channels.
Distribution Network
HDFC Bank is headquartered in Mumbai. The Bank at present has an enviable network of over 455 branches spread over 207 cities across the country. All branches are linked on an online real-time basis. Customers in 90 locations are also serviced through Phone Banking. As their name suggests, they only execute their operations online. Customers can only be in contact with their money over the internet since they do not have any physical branches. Because online-only banks require lower overhead costs, they have the capability to offer more free services and higher interest rates compared to a traditional bank. Online banking provides many customers the convenience of handling their business at any physical location as long as they have access to internet. This is possible because of the variety of services that online banks provide despite limiting interaction to only the internet. Some of their services include applying for loans online, transferring funds and paying bills online. While the convenience of being able to access banking through the internet is worthwhile, there are limits to it. For example, making large deposits to the bank is limited and can only be made through the mail, they don’t service cashier checks for transactions, and withdrawing money from the account is very inconvenient. Since one of the largest positions in my investment portfolio is Bank of America, traded on the NASDAQ under the symbol (BAC), I decided to take and in-depth look at this company and hopefully see for myself why this stock and other financials have performed so well over the past few months. I also hope to educate myself more about BAC and financials in general, so that I can have a more detailed and meaningful conversation with my portfolio manager about why he chose BAC as my largest financial position.
Bank of Melbourne is the local financial institution which located in victoria city of Australia. It was set up in 1989 and re-established in 2011, and it is the subsidiary owned by Westpac.
