In the story “Coming to America, Finding Your Voice”, journalist Hinojosa illustrates that being powerful means having the courage to speak up and trust who you are. The author shares the story of how her mother came to the U.S. from Mexico, describing her mom’s reaction when immigration agent in Texas told her that Hinojosa, her baby, couldn’t come into the country. “The super-tall Texan immigration agent with the super-thick accent towered over my five-foot-tall mom who also had a very thick accent--a Mexican one,” she states. How frightening this situation must have been for her mom is clearly conveyed through intimidating words such as “towered”. In addition, she stresses the comparison between the agent’s accent, a common one in Texas, and her mom’s Mexican one, which most likely made
Hi everyone! How are you today? Nice to see all you guys here. Let’s me introduce myself first. My name is Jane Kennedy. I am one of writers of the film ‘The Castle’. I’m sure that everyone has watched ‘The Castle’, right? I’m invited to be here and tell you about this movie as well as how I and my team have built up and shown the ideas about the voice of Australians through it. As you know, everyone including Australians have their own way of understanding and an opinion of the world and people in it. That’s called their ‘voice’. However, the way Australians view and understand the world is unique. Let’s come back to ‘The Castle’, this is a story about the Kerrigan family who together stand up to fight against the government for their
My passion towards working with students every day has led me to the decision of pursuing a doctoral degree in Student Affairs in Higher Education at Miami University. I have chosen this program to prepare myself for a future role as a professor or a senior level college administrator. This program will allow me to become more proficient within the students’ educational experience and therefore better engage students in active learning.
Two professors of different backgrounds, Mike Rose of California, and Gerald Graff, of Illinois, discuss the problems college students face today in America. Though similar in slight variations, both professors view the problem in different regards and prepare solutions that solve what they feel to be the heart of this academic problem.

TRiO has been an incredibly valuable asset to my college experience. They have provided me with weekly check-in appointments with a peer mentor, programming opportunities to become a better student, and have served as an intermediary between me and other offices on campus when I have needed help with a topic that TRiO wasn’t equipped for. By utilizing these tools, I have become a well-rounded student and enhanced my experience at Northwest Missouri State University. Knowing I had this support behind me gave me the confidence I needed to join multiple organizations on campus such as Student Senate and the Residential Hall Association; even fulfilling leadership positions in these groups. I did this while also maintaining a 3.92 GPA. TRiO has assisted me in finding academic resources on campus and staying on track to reaching my goal to graduate
Katherine Bergeron’s book, Voice Lessons: French Mélodie in the Belle Epoque, approaches French art song in a new and unique way, making it an invaluable resource for art song scholars and performers alike. Bergeron’s goals for this book are primarily abstract in nature; she aims to tell a story “about that French sound, both what it was and how it got that way” (viii). To achieve her vision, Bergeron examines the mélodie through a variety of different lenses, including musical, vocal, aural, linguistic, literary, scientific, philosophical, and cultural angles.

Throughout life we express ourselves through words. The way we present ourselves through speech says a lot about our character. The way one speaks to others can jeopardize the amount of respect and trust others have for them. From the way one pronounces a word to their posture can affect the way an audience interprets what is being said. Personally, I am not confident with my speaking skills at this point. I would like my audience to fully comprehend the concepts or facts that I would present to them. In order to do so I must improve my speaking skills I believe that a problem most people, including myself, have when giving speeches is facing an audience. Just looking out to an audience of a mere ten

Through Ewers’ leadership, musicians could add variety to their repertoire, giving them access to a broader spectrum of performances. Performing with the Opera would allow for additional productions each year creating rotations for instrumentalists wanting to crossover and perform in both genres. Combining the two styles could create a pop style opera that could potentially reach the younger demographic, once again increasing revenue. Although Ewers’ experience was primarily in opera, it is her positional power and knack for building fiscally sound companies that made her the easy choice to lead both companies. While the symphony struggled at fundraising, Ewers’ UOC annual budget grew 3X from her predecessor, mainly due to her corporate sponsorships that reached beyond the state of Utah (Delong & Ager, 2005, p. 3). One of Ewers’ first challenges was to get Keith Lockhart, Music Director for the USO onboard with her plan on how to merge the two entities. Lockhart’s concern was the proposed organizational chart that showed him reporting directly to Ewers rather than the Chairman as he had with the USO (Delong & Ager, 2005, p. 14). Ewers personal
