What is Political Socialization? Essay

The process of political socialization is vital in the developing of how one views politics, the way they act or choose not to act, and how they identify within the political system. Although countless influences sway or attract us to a given political view, party, or identification, there are undoubtedly certain factors that play a bigger role in this process. Some of the most prominent agents of political socialization are as follows; family, media, peers, education, religion, faith, race, gender, age, geography, and socioeconomic status. We know these develop or determine our views of politics but now we’ll look at how and why they have such an impact.

I am going to tell you my Political Ideology in this essay today. I would like to consider myself a Conservative, but the number one thing for me would be what that person said and what they planned on doing. If anything, I don't really care if they are Liberal or Conservative, what really matters is what they are planning on doing, but I guess I'm going to have to decide what I am. A Liberal... Conservative... or Libertarian.

A lot of things have played a role in my personal political socialization. Political ideology is the places where you have informed your beliefs from. The first example of where I get my personal political socialization is from my family. Second I have influence from my location in the U.S.A. Finally I get influence from Narragansett High School which is the school I currently attend. That is where I received my personal political socialization from.

In my life I have never had any political enforcement or strict religious influence. My parents were very lenient when it came too political preaching. I was taught to be a caring and respectful individual. My political understanding and beliefs have been molded from my early political memories and socialization experiences. As a young adult I have always strived to become knowledgeable about political ideals mainly because I was never really taught to believe in something specific. I eventually was drawn towards many different social and political perspectives, which is how I came to a logical conclusion of how I view the world politically

There are many influences on my political beliefs and actions. There are four main areas define who I am politically. Those areas are the Environment, Agents of Political Socialization, Personal Characteristics, Personality and Human Nature.

Political socialization begins early on in life and is an ongoing process affecting individuals throughout. It is how people eventually identify personal beliefs and expectations in American politics. These political views can include our level of patriotism, faith in the democratic system, standards by which we hold governing bodies, and opinions regarding public policies. From the playground to the classroom, the office to the dinner table, much of our lives affect our political opinions. The most easily identified agents of this are family, schooling, peers, mass media, political parties and religious influences. Political ideology is defined as a certain set of ideals and principles of a person that explain how society should work, and offers some political and cultural plan for social order. Specific opinions and ideals on different subjects are lumped together, which creates groups of people with similar political ideologies called political parties. People feel differently about different issues and those beliefs range from liberal to conservative. Overall, I consider myself a moderate, which is in between liberal and conservative. I feel that I am a moderate because on some issues I agree with a liberal point of view, while on others I agree with a conservative point of view.

Two of the four main ideologies in the Unites States that are important in determining America’s healthcare initiative are liberalism and conservatism. In contrast to one another, liberalism is a belief in using the government for the purpose of economic regulation and redistribution but not for the purpose of preserving traditional values while conservatism is a belief in using the government for preserving traditional values but not using it for economic regulation/redistribution. In America, there are two main ideologies, or organized set of ideas founded on basic principles: liberal and conservative (Kollman 331). Liberal ideology is focused on government action to alleviate social ills and pushing for social, political, and economic equality. Conversely, conservative ideology prioritizes limited government, free markets, individual liberty, and traditional American values. The Democrat Party aligns more with liberal values, while the Republican Party has ideological values that align more with conservatism. The Pew Research Center has divided the American public into eight politically engaged groups or “typologies,” along with a less engaged group labeled Bystanders. When I was younger, my political beliefs were largely influenced by my parents, and as ardently Republican as they come. My father, a self-proclaimed historian, passed his immeasurable passion for political science and philosophy on to me from an early age. Through the paradigm of conservatism, he believed in an infinitesimal government, and as most children do, I mimicked his beliefs. Until my freshman year, I held those convictions almost as strongly as he did, and t wasn’t until I began volunteering at my local hospital that I began to explore political perspectives different from the ones I had known.
