When Christopher’s father comes back home after leaving, he sees Christopher reading his mother’s letters. Christopher’s father was trying to hide the letters from Christopher, but was unsuccessful. When Christopher’s father realizes this he immediately said, “Those are. . . Oh shit. . . Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit." (Haddon 114) knowing that Christopher read the letters from his mother. Christopher’s father said, “I killed Wellington” (Haddon 120) and Christopher could not comprehend whether his father was joking around or being completely honest with him. Christopher’s father tells Christopher the truth about his mother and Wellington after talking about the letters. When Christopher realizes his mother is alive and his father lied to him, he felt betrayed. His father tells Christopher it was for his own good and that he had to keep it a secret from him. In sociology, we observed a film called The Pursuit Happyness, where we witnessed the struggles a father went through to succeed. Chris Gardner, who was played by Will Smith, is living in his apartment with his wife and his son. Due to their struggles, the mother walks out on and leaves Chris struggling alone with his son. In the film Chris Gardner applies for an unpaid internship for a competitive stockbroker company where out of twenty men, only one gets the job. While he is on his internship, we see the hardships of getting kicked out of his apartment to staying at a shelter home to then sleeping in a subway bathroom with his son. Viewing the movie through a sociological lens, The Pursuit of Happyness will be analyzed according to the major three sociological paradigms: structural functionalism, social conflict theory, and symbolic interactionalism.

Based on the real life story of Chris Gardner, the Pursuit of Happyness looks at the crests and troughs in Chris' life on his way to becoming a stock broker, and eventually as everyone knows, a multi-millionaire. Will Smith played the role of Chris Gardner while Smith's son, Jaden Smith played Gardner's 7 or 8-year-old son.

The documentary ‘Happy’ was probably one of the best documentaries I have ever watched. It is a documentary on what truly makes people around the world happy. The movie takes you through true stories of the lives of all kinds of people with different life situations within the entire world. Through each individual story it shows how even though they may have gone or are going through tough situations, they still remain happy with life itself.

This shows that when Father was honest with him, he would then try to acknowledge the truth to be able to understand why he did what he did, he would then be able to look back at all the times that Father has been good to him and weigh the bad and good of him as a father and may give him a second chance. Lastly, the conflict between Christopher and Father helps develop the theme when one realizes what to fix in order to show the value for the person. Father knows the tension he had caused by being dishonest, and by being honest, he was able to gain back trust from Christopher to show him that he valued their relationship. With that Father will learn how to value honesty in a relationship and show Christopher that he valued him as a person and their relationship as a whole. This is an influential point for both book and movie because it has the effect of showing how both mothers are in and out of their child’s life but yet the father reminds to keep everything together. Basing character tendencies on how the mothers leave and the main character (father) with stay. Yet the movie does not detail this information but is evident to the abandonment of his actual wife at one point in the film. In the film, the wife leaves at the one-hour mark (film time). The film keeps their focus off the wife/mother to put more power in the struggle of Gardner’s life as a father. In contrast, the film “The Pursuit of Happyness” featured the bigger picture of the actual story. More so the theme that Chris Gardner conveyed in the book. The film goes from struggling married couple with a son, to a struggling single father chasing the ultimate dream of successfulness. The difference from the book is that Chris Gardner and his wife were together on and off. They struggle to make the relationship work but have differences in what they want to pursue.

Happy. Hardworking. Generous. Chris Gardner faces these emotions through achieving his goals which shows through perseverance, we can be happy. Through perseverance, Chris wants to achieve his goals so it shows we can be happy. In the movie, Pursuit of Happyness, the main character Chris Gardner achieves his goals through his job, son and home which shows through perseverance, we can be happy.

These short and simple paragraphs convey Christopher’s thoughts and opinions towards his mother’s death. However, strangely there is no emotions conveyed in this passage which suggests that Christopher has a very different way of thinking and processing events to a ‘normal’ person. He did not seem to be upset with the loss of his mother at all.

Chris Gardner is an American businessman, investor, stockbroker, motivational speaker, author, and philanthropist. Based on this real-life story of Chris Gardner, Will Smith takes the role of Christopher Gardner, who was a salesman struggling to satisfy the needs of his wife, Thandie Newton, and their son, Jaden Christopher Syre Smith. With the financial problems, his wife gives up the struggles, abandoning him and their son. Things get worse as Gardner and his son are evicted from their residence leaving them with no option but to try surviving on the streets of San Francisco. They are forced to move from one place to another in the bid to get a shelter wherever they are lucky to get one. The movie demonstrates us how vigorously he is eager to chase his happiness in many burdensome ways. It exhibits how Chris Gardner becomes homeless in the beginning of the movie, but later he becomes a successful dream achiever after putting all his hard work.

Christopher’s real change happens when Christopher finds a stack of letter’s his ‘supposedly dead’ mother - “Mother died 2 years ago.” - writes to him whilst finding the book he was writing. This happens because his father tells him not to mind other’s business - “Father said, ‘Just try and keep your nose out of other people’s business.’” - and in result of not following his dad’s orders gets his book taken away. During his ‘detective work’ Christopher finds out the real reason as to why Wellington’s owner’s husband left as he was one of Chris’s main suspects. He finds out that his mother was having an affair with him. So when Christopher goes to find the book he finds the stack of letters - “One other possibility was that Father had hidden my book somewhere in the house.” -. All this leads to his change because if it wasn’t for his realization that his mother was alive he would have stayed and nothing would have differed. It is what leads to Christopher wanting to find his mother, and on this journey he experiences new danger and he learns how to cope with the real world. I believe the finding of the letters is very important as it helps the readers to sympathize with Christopher it also makes you sad especially because he is autistic and cannot understand why his father would lie to him.
