Dear, Dr Segal-Argelston and professor Williams, many past experiences I've had with a writing class all pertain to my years in high school. I have had many English classes but very few writing classes. Though I was in an English class most of my time, my class did very little writing. It wasn't until my junior year of high school that I had an actual writing class. This writing class taught me many tips and tricks for writing a good essay. By the end of this class my writing skills were strengthened significantly because I had to write three to four essays a week. A weakness I have related to writing would be trying to bring out my thoughts on a subject and formulate them into a well-rounded sentence. Different parts of the sentence grammatical
I had my appointment on the previous week at the Writing center. I brought my 2nd project for ENGL 160 class. I scheduled tutor to “face to face”, because I think it is the best way to improve all of my mistakes. Before going to Writing center, I was thinking that this tutor doesn’t help me at all, but fortunately my thoughts was wrong and I enjoyed 1 hour of editing my project.
Based on my classroom learning experience and the interacting within the Deaf community, I have several point to bring to attention that will elaborate my thoughts on beneficial attributes of an ASL class personally and professionally. This class actually has become one of the most challenging, yet satisfying classes I have every taken in my life. The area which is engaged the least, producing ASL, is to me the most beneficial. This area of the class is the heart-and-soul of why I fell in love with it. It’s using communication to connect with others. At first while attending ASL 1, I loved the large classroom size because it was easier to hide amongst others. I still seem to rely on this mechanism such as the Deaf events and when they
Writing is a skill that needs to be practiced. Before this class, I didn't care about the writing because my high school teachers didn't care about my writing, as long as I turn a paper, I would be fine. Now, at the end of my Comp 2 class, I can assure I have improved my skills. From simply using MLA 8th format to writing an ethnography, this class has helped me get a more advanced writing style to accomplish the requirements that higher education requires.
This semester in ENGL 210, I have learned about most forms of business writing as well as the various means of communication used in the business world. Along with this understanding, I have also learned how to write many different kinds of letters both formally and informally. In this class, I have written a bad news letter, a cover letter, and a thank you letter all with correct formatting, styling, and pacing. We also learned about memo format and had to write two for class. Along with memos and letters, we also wrote a resume and filmed an elevator pitch. Although I already had a resume, the one I created in class was a lot higher quality, and I now use an edited form of it to apply for summer jobs. The elevator pitch is a little to unedited
The first piece of writing in this section is my creative writing. I wrote this piece during my freshman year. The purpose for this piece was to grow my skills in story writing and my enhance my grammar skills. When I wrote this paper I wasn’t good at writing. Looking at this piece, I can see my thoughts didn’t flow well and I was all over the place. I wasn’t very excited to write so I didn’t do well on this paper.
Throughout the semester in this WRT 106 class we were assigned different assignments, each with a different purpose but all having to do with one main topic. The topic I decided to focus on this semester was police brutality. It is safe to say I have really enhanced my knowledge on this topic. Each project provided more and more knowledge to myself on this topic because of all the research associated with the assignment. The assignments throughout the semester were challenging, interesting, and had a process behind them that involved a lot of revision and feedback from many of my peers, but in the end of it all there were many learning outcomes as well. Looking back on this class, I have realized just how much my writing has improved since the beginning of the semester and that first assignment.
The assigned video for this week's reflection assignment was presented by Iraqveteran8888 via youtube.com. The video is titled "History's deadliest bullet". Iraqveteran8888 begins the video by introducing co-worker of his at Moss Pawn, whom he notes to be a Civil War era firearm enthusiast. He introduces the coveted Minie ball round developed by French Army Captain Claude Minie. The design at the time I believe to be revolutionary in nature. Iraqveteran8888 states this round changed the face of warfare as it was known at the time. What made the Minie ball unique was the addition of "skirting" to the body of the cartridge. Prior to it's inception ammunition was a lead ball. They were not so dynamic when being fired as they would allow for gases
I have enjoyed this class so much and have learned a lot as well. Many ideas, concepts, techniques have stood out to me. The first thing would be how I can still apply and develop the ability to write in preschool and kindergarten students. Many of the ideas and concepts can be simplified for younger students to begin to build a good foundations for writing. Writing Power and POW-TREE are great ways to get students excited about writing. They are also great ways to teach students about how to write and to write in an effective way.
Mr. Omar`s English class has been a beneficial learning experience for me. In the past, I have had trouble in the past with my writing skills, but this class has taught me how to write proper research English papers. In my previous classes I did not follow the format of an essay. Most of my essays were disorganized and chaotic. My past essays were a big part of my consistently low English grade. In the beginning of the semester, my writing skills were very undeveloped. I did not know why my skills were poor but I knew I had to learn from scratch if I wanted to exceed in writing English papers. My most obvious problem or failing was my incapability to write well-structured paragraphs. For example, in one paragraph I would include two different
When I took the second practice exam for the English section of the ACT, I was surprised to find that I received the exact same score as when I took it the first time. I thought that this was puzzling, especially considering how much studying and review I had done in preparation for the second test. Looking at specific question types, I see that my prior strengths such as grammar and sentence structure stayed relatively consistent. I again got 12 out of 12 on the grammar, and got 16 out of 18 instead of 17 out of 18 on the sentence structure portion. I reviewed the question and answer and found that I had just not read the question carefully enough and I knew the answer. The second question I missed was about appositive phrases, however, instead
Over the past few months, I have learned several different writing techniques. While all of the different types of papers were difficult to write, I believe that my writing skills have improved. However, I did not understand all of the assignments, but I did try to do my best on all of them. I should have used more transitional words. It is true that I have not had very much writing experience and the writing process is difficult for me. Sometimes, I do admit, it takes days to complete one assignment. I also have to write an essay several times before it sounds right. I did not know where to place a comma in a sentence, and had quite a few run-on sentences. I also learned how to do effective research on a subject. Additionally, I learned
This semester was my first semester as a college student at Front Range Community College. Since it was my first, it was definitely one of the most difficult and stressful due to the importance of starting my college experience off well. During my English Composition 1 class, I learned several different things. I learned how to self revise my work, the importance of having an audience to write to, using better word choice, how to write in different styles and genres, how to incorporate research sources into a paper, and an understanding as why writing is important. Through articles, class discussions, class exercises, and lessons I was able to obtain these skills. I know these writing techniques set the expectations that would be essential for me to follow the next four years. These techniques have only helped me become a better writer. Although, I was able to learn these new skills my writing still needs an improvement. Some skills that need improvement are better word choice, staying on topic, correctly placing resources into papers, and writing to a specific audience. However, I’ve still noticed some improvement in my writing from high school up until now.
Throughout my writing over the semester I feel I have improved in various ways and I feel this class has improved my writing skills. I have learned throughout the year that I need to continue practicing writing because I have a lot to work on to make my writing better. Before I took this class I didn’t really know how to incorporate a quote into a paper. I didn’t know how to quote sources and how to cite the source so you can give credit to the author. This class help me learn how to incorporate quotes by doing the “quote sandwich” I know now that I have to introduce the quote and put the quote in then you have to explain what the quote is talking about or what it means and how it is useful for the paper you are writing. Before this class I have not written a paper that is more than two pages and with the experience of writing papers in this class it will help me with future classes and further learning. With writing research papers in this class it has helped me in my synthesis (combining other people's words and ideas) because I had to research the ideas and pull out valuable information from others paper about the topic and put them together.. With using multiple sources in my research paper I had to use quotes in all their papers and organize in a way that would show how their paper agrees or disagrees with the other papers. I had to combine all the author's main thoughts and show how they all relate to each other. My overall sentence structure throughout the semester
There were many things that I was able to learn this semester in this class but in the next few pages I will take time to go over five main aspects that I really took away from this class. The first aspect that I wanted to touch on that I learned was the aspect that no matter what you can come back from terrible mistakes that you had made. There were many times where the topic that we talked about in class is very somber and wasn’t extremely hopeful, but something that I took away from talks and readings, as well as class discussion is that no matter what you can change and become better. Many times, after we mess up we tend to get down on ourselves and not see the progression that we have made whether we have an addiction, or we are just working on bettering ourselves.
This past semester I have the privilege of working with Ms. Velasquez algebra class. I have seen how she teaches and how she conducts her class for the last few months. I was already finished my hour before I received this reflection, and have attempted to reach my cooperating teacher for more information over how she plans for her lesson. However, she did not respond back, it could have been with the holiday that just passed she just forgot to respond back. I will answer, to the best my abilities for what I observed and the question that I would ask her throughout the semester.
