According to psychodynamic view, what cause DID?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Dissociative Identity Disorder refers to a psychological in which a person maintains at least two distinct and relatively endured states of personality. This disorder is marked by complex mental conditions in the form of dissociation from one's feelings, thoughts, behaviours, memories and even the sense of identity. Such condition is known to have caused due to traumatic experiences, a person dissociates himself from the situation they are facing if it is too painful, violent, stressful or traumatizing for them to handle. This is a coping mechanism against the aversive situation or experience.

Step 2

Dissociative disorders were earlier considered as a form of Hysteria, their prevalence was found more in women than man. However Sigmund Freud the pioneer of psychoanalysis regarded it in terms of an aspect of the psyche. He described dissociation as a something normal which is used by the ego as a mechanism to defend itself against the unacceptable thoughts or conflicts in the unconscious mind. The psychodynamic approach explains the process of dissociation as a result of the excessive use of a coping mechanism of repression. The person tries to repress all the negative impulses or thoughts arising from the unconscious and the outcome of which results in splitting off from the conscious part of personality with painful and unsettling memories and thoughts.

The psychoanalytic therapy is designed in a way to associate and bring the dissociated parts of personality together. This therapy presents as the tools to help in bringing the unsettling and unresolved conflicts to the person's awareness so that he confronts and tries to resolve it. Psychotherapy is also the talk therapy or free association technique through which the therapist tries to help the person understand the triggers that causes dissociative reactions and to associate the two distinct personality traits merges as one, of which the person gains the control over.

This therapy is widely used and is persistent in treating personality and dissociative disorders. It is acknowledged and used by the therapists across the countries.
