Step 1: Introduction

Meiosis is a specialized process of cell division that occurs in the reproductive cells to form gametes. One diploid germ cell divides via meiosis to produce four haploid gametes. It is also called reductional division as the chromosome number is reduced to half in gametes as compared to the parent cells in this mode of cell division. A cell undergoes two rounds of meiotic division, namely Meiosis I and Meiosis II, and each cycle is divided into distinct phases: Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase., and Cytokinesis. 

The gametes, sperm in males, and egg in females are responsible for reproduction by fusion. Since fusion results in the addition of the number of chromosomes present in both germ cells, it is important that the germ cells contain half the number of chromosomes present in the original organisms which is achieved via Meiosis.
