Question

Define nonpolar solvent ?

Expert Solution
Step 1

An atom is made up of subatomic particles. Electrons, neutrons, and protons are the subatomic particles. Each atom of an element contains these three subatomic particles. The nucleus of an atom consists of neutrons and protons whereas electrons revolve around the nucleus.

Step 2

A covalent bond is formed between two atoms by the sharing of electrons. The electron density is equally distributed between atoms. However, when an atom that has a higher electronegativity is bonded through a covalent bond it pulls electron density towards itself. As a result, atoms have partial positive and partial negative charges and a dipole is generated.
