Carboxylation reactions involve addition of CO2 to a substrate and production of a carboxylic acid group (COO-). Biotin is often the coenzyme for carboxylase enzymes. The CO2 molecule is transiently transferred to the biotin coenzyme during the reaction.
Carboxylase enzymes catalyze important metabolic reactions. For instance, pyruvate carboxylase converts pyruvate to oxaloacetate. Oxaloacetate is an intermediate of the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA) and thus, can enter the TCA cycle. Carboxylase enzymes play important role in lipid metabolism too.
