The elastic deformation is stored in the form of potential energy within the structure of the beam, which is known as internal strain energy. It depends on the size of the beam. It is basically used in determining the impact of load applied on the beam.

The expression for strain energy is,

Here б is the stress applied on the beam, E is Young’s modulus and V is the volume of the beam.

As the above formula suggests that, for bearing the impact load-
