I think the most significant thing I learned is the amount of trust that is needed between the public and public health officials. It is a fragile balance that can be shattered with one wrong step by public health officials. In fact in the midst of the pandemic, only about 25% of people greatly trusted their local and state public health departments, with the majority only somewhat trusting them (SteelFisher et al., 2023). In many of the cases we looked at, distrust within the public usually seemed to make recovery harder, and not enough was done to restore trust.  The rising rates of gun violence and mass shootings are a grim testament to the failures of the country's leadership. I think the most significant thing I learned is the amount of trust that is needed between the public and public health officials. It is a fragile balance that can be shattered with one wrong step by public health officials. The rising rates of gun violence and mass shootings are a grim testament to the failures of the country's leadership. Since each state has its own laws, there is variability when collecting data on firearm-related deaths, but collectively as a nation, there are nearly 10,000 Years of Potential Life Lost (Jehan et al., 2018). Many attempts have been made to pass stricter gun laws, but only a few have been put into effect even though much of the public supports these laws.
