In engineering, stress and strain describe the conditions of a material under varying
circumstances. Stress is the material's resistance to external forces, measured in terms of the
force exerted per unit of area, and strain is the material's chain resulting from those external
forces. Every force that acts on a material creates a type of stress, and each stress has an
accompanying type of strain. The three basic types of stress are tensile, compressive and
shearing (Pauley, 2012).

Previous studies of Philippine English phonology, such as that of Tayao and Llamzon have dealt
much with segmental phonemes, describing vowels and consonants. There is, however, very
little material on suprasegmental. Tayao (2009) in her study recommends that further
investigation of suprasegmental features of speech can be conducted to include
morphophonemic changes that appear because of speech. This study is of such endeavor. It
describes the suprasegmental features of the English spoken by Cebuanos in the southern part of
the province (Tayao, 2009).
