Organometallic compounds contain a carbon atom that is covalently bonded to a metal atom. This carbon-metal bond is typically polar covalent, with the carbon atom being more electronegative than the metal atom, and so the carbon atom carries a partial negative charge. This makes the carbon atom in the organometallic compound electron-rich and makes it behave as a Lewis base, meaning it can donate a pair of electrons to a Lewis acid, such as the metal atom in the same compound.
