Electrons are negative. If you know how many electrons an element gains or loses, then you can easily determine the charge of the ion.
As examples:
if an element loses 4 electrons. Then it will be positive because it lost electrons. And positive by 4 because it lost 4 electrons. So a charge of +4
if an element gains 1electron. Then it will be negative because it gained electron. And negative by 1 because it gained 1 electrons. So acharge of -1
