Great Automation Sdn. Bhd. is a local company producing and support automated manufacturing system. The company has 200 design engineers and another 30 engineers working on system assembly and customizations. They were supported with supporting technical staffs and operators. The focus is on technology innovation, domain expertise, rather than fabrication, as most of the fabrication work are systematically contracted out. The company was founded in 2000 and has been growing rapidly, not only serving local, but ASEAN manufacturing facilities. Since founding, the company never put any focus on managing Intellectual Properties, and just to design and deliver in what has been requested by its clients. Last year, the company just ended up a lawsuit that they have to stop selling one of its customised machine. The machine incorporated some of the element that was formally designed, where third party (a competitor) claimed that it is theirs. Later found out informally, that the company former engineer joined them 5 years ago, and incorporate the said element into the competitor’s automated machine, but in a different application. The competitor then filed and granted the patent. It was an alarming experience to Great Automation.

 

Imagine that you are the newly employed Manager to manage Intellectual Properties and innovation in Great Automation. The CEO has given you following tasks to deliver:

 

  1. By not increasing further overhead of Great Automation, propose a small setup of the Intellectual Properties and Innovation Management department. Propose a workable department organization chart and justify the need of the manpower / human resource you are proposing. This proposal will be presented to the CEO, then later to the Board of Directors of Great 
  2. You need to act fast to protect the intellectual properties of the Great Automation. Propose one immediate initiative, discuss the rationale and how you and your department going are to implement it to achieve the said 

 

The Great Automation started as a small setup and the significantly grow to the present size in the past 5 years. The CEO understands that innovation comes with supporting environment with incentives and recognition. Just that the company is too busy to deliver project after project, job after job. You are tasked to look into it as one of your portfolios.
