The branch of Physics which deals with magnetism due to electric current is called electromagnetism. 

Oersted showed that the electric current through the wire deflects the magnetic needle held near it. The direction of deflection of the magnetic needle is reversed if the direction of current in the wire is reversed. This shows that the magnetic field is associated with a current-carrying wire.

An electric current is equivalent to charges in motion. Such charges produce magnetic interaction. The magnetic field produced by the conductor carrying current thus interacts with the magnetic needle and deflects it.
