Oxytocin is a hormone secreted by the pituitary gland that acts on the female reproductive system. It functions both as a peptide hormone and as a neuropeptide. It is responsible for carrying out its function at the time of parturition and reproduction.
The oxytocin act on the uterus in the female reproductive system. It is principally responsible for causing the contraction of the uterus at the time of parturition and it helps in lactation. It triggers the muscles of the uterus and also enhances the secretion of prostaglandins which enhances the contraction.
The secretion of oxytocin is stimulated by physical stimuli. The Suckling action of the infant causes the stimulation of oxytocin and helps in lactation. At the time of labor pain, the oxytocin is secreted in the pulses from the pituitary gland and then into the blood circulation for contraction of the uterus.
