Summative Assessment: Collaborative Assignment Reflection Cristina Torres Department of Healthcare Administration/University of Phoenix MHA/520: Sector Stakeholders: Identifying and Cultivating Alliances Instructor: Dr. Canuta Price April 22, 2024
Overall Strategy and Implementation Reflecting on my group discussion, we all felt that the goal of the merger is to ensure the quality of care that is being delivered is not affected but also improved. It is also important to ensure that the staff is also not affected by the merger. The most challenging things that arise during mergers are resistance to change, communication barriers, leadership and role retention, and cultural differences. We all agreed that when merging two organizations it is important to have clear and open communication amongst everyone involved. Major Factors and Considerations Two major factors that we looked at were how this would affect the providers and employees within both organizations. We also looked at how the merger would affect the consumers and community both organizations serve. As a group we considered how we would identify common values, how we would engage the staff, and how human resources and leadership will play a vital role in the transition of the merger. When merging two organizations it can be difficult to implement the cultural value differences, in which it will be important for us to ensure our strategic plan is concrete in developing the shaped intended culture we plan to adopt. We also made the decision to have a back-up plan in case other challenges arise. Health Sector Best Practices The best practice that I drew from my research was structured communication. “Structured communications are vital to clarify what comes next in a merger, separate fact from fiction, and forge success for newly combined organizations.” (Engert et al., 2019) Everyone from the group stated that communication was a fundamental practice that would help in the merger. A strong communications strategy ensures that the right messages are communicated and reinforced to minimize the anxiety of employees, boost morale, and retain talent. A communication strategy also conveys the transition of the new combined
organization’s future vision and strategy to the key stakeholders for both internal and external which include the consumers, regulators, vendors, providers, and employees. (Engert et al., 2019) The majority of us in the group decided that a collaborative team would ensure to allow effective communication throughout the process. The collaborative team would include at least one representative from each stakeholder involved to serve as the point of contact. The collaborative team would also enable the thoughts of the staff to be heard by all parties involved. Effective communication would allow the ability to adapt to the new foundation smoothly. The collaborative team would also assist in creating the cultural organization to be adopted within the transition of the merger of both organizations. The most important aspect to ensure communication is enforced to is ensure the leaders of both organizations understand the process and the shared vision of the goal being implemented by the merger. Professional Life Strategies One major facilitation and negotiation strategy that was employed during my group discussion that I know for sure I can use in my professional life was the “SWOT Analysis Theory”. Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, ands threats can be used to evaluate an organization’s competitive position and assist in developing the strategic plan. (Kenton, 2023) Currently, I am a senior accounting assistant for perioperative services at the hospital I work at. I formally used to work in human resources assisting the healthcare administration benefits department. With that being said, I am inspired one day to be working as a business process analyst for hospital compliance. The SWOT analysis is a strategic planning technique that provides assessment tools to help identify core strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in which leads to fact-based analysis, fresh perspectives, and new ideas. It has been stated that the SWOT analysis works best when diverse groups or voices within an organization are free to provide realistic data points rather than a prescribed message. (Kenton, 2023) One group member stated that utilizing a SWOT analysis during the transition of a merger and changes will help the collaborative team with creating the plan and stay organized
