Hello Professor and Classmates, These weeks reading about research and the different types was very informative and helped me in understanding the purpose behind the types of research conducted. Why is the knowledge of research methods valuable as a consumer of research? Understanding the research methods is a tool one can utilize to effectively research a topic to learn or contribute to. As a consumer of research, it is critical to ensure that the information being utilized is a trustworthy source and if the data is credible and accurate. Utilizing the hierarchy of research is essential to accurate research methods. As a consumer of research, accuracy is the name of the game when it comes to utilizing and trusting the data and information from sources for a research essay. Much like we as consumers when it comes to our cell phones, we utilize those name brands that ensure quality much like an Apple product. Companies often conduct research to identify the needs or wants of their consumers. This type of research has an agenda and can easily formulate a bias. This type of consumer research can strengthen a business or corporation. In an article written by Grand Canyon University, consumer research is important because it can help identify the needs and wants of its customers, and keep a focus of opinions that truly matter, which is the consumers, not the bias of the business. There are various methods to conducting research and collecting information. In some cases, scientists conduct experiments that control the variable to observe what is the result, the pros and cons of their research. One commonality is that all type of research and experiments require evidence once complete. In an article written by the American Psychological Association, APA, it is stated that the most important lesson about being a wise consumer of psychological research is that, from a scientific perspective, all claims require evidence, not just opinions. What does it mean to be a consumer of scholarly research, as opposed to conducting actual research? The definition of scholarly research according to the University of Omaha is information or research that comes from academic or professional journals that are written by experts in a particular field. It is based on extensive research and includes an original study. To be a consumer of scholarly research means you are utilizing trusted sources who are experts in their field with quantifiable data to support their research.
Conducting actual research is formulating your own data and information to either change or draw your own hypothesis regarding the topic you are trying to solve or provide information about. Greener stated that: At the top of the hierarchy are peer-reviewed journal articles and monographs published by good quality publishing houses. A peer- reviewed journal is one that sends out articles submitted to it for examination by academics in the field, getting their opinion of whether the piece is any good or not, and if it is not publishable, whether it ought to be rejected by the editors of the journal, or whether it can be rewritten sufficiently to be publishable. The type of research one is conducting can dictate the type of information that is presented on a topic that can have a lasting impact. References American Psychological Association. (n.d.).
