GRIEF 1 Grief Noucheka Pierre Grand Canyon University PSY-258 Professor Hunt 04/07/2024
GRIEF 2 Grief Grief is a multifaceted, complex, and natural process of responding to loss. Grieving can encompass a wide range of behaviors, emotions, and thoughts an individual experiences when something or someone stops being present in their lives ( McLaughlin, 2021) . Grief is not just limited to death but can also arise from other types of losses such as a severe decline in health, despair, loneliness, loss of a job, and end of a long relationship. Grief varies from person to person and is deeply personal. Grief can manifest in many ways, including physical, psychological, and social. Types of grief There are many types of grief, with different response mechanisms and challenges. The most recognized type of grief that is familiar to most people is the death of a loved one ( Schladitz, et al, 2021) . Death can cause a significant physical, emotional, and psychological effect on the bereaved. The duration and intensity of grief caused by the death of a loved one depends on the level of closeness and the connection they had with the deceased. For instance, the death of a child can evoke significant grief in the parents. Most parents will respond to the grief by feeling emptiness, guilt, anger, and intense sadness. Another common type of grief is caused by the breakup of a romantic relationship. When individuals are in love, they invest significantly in emotions and develop significant attachments ( Schladitz, et al, 2021) . The ending of such a close connection can trigger immense sadness and feelings of grief like that of the death of a loved one. The affected may feel a loss of appetite, fatigue, loneliness, and rejection. They may also struggle to accept the change in their lives.
GRIEF 3 Another type of grief is the loss of a pet. Pets are critical sources of companionship for most people and are highly cherished by most family members ( Schladitz, et al, 2021) . Due to the connection established between the pets and the owners, their loss can be very painful. Additionally, loss of health, especially after being diagnosed with a terminal illness can be another type of grief. Other types of loss of health such as disability or critical injury are associated with adjustments to life and reality. Anticipatory grief is also a known type of grief that occurs when someone anticipates the loss of a loved one due to factors such as prolonged or terminal illness. Disenfranchised grief is not very common but is associated with griefs that are not commonly validated or recognized, such as pregnancy loss. There is no specific timeline or design for grief but varies across individuals and depending on the type of grief ( Prince, 2021) . While some individuals may take years to come to terms with the loss, some begin to feel better after a few weeks or months. The process of grief is unique to every person and there is no right or wrong way to do it. Some individuals feel numb for some time after a loss before they regain their emotions, while others experience intense emotions just after the grief and they fade away quickly. Indian traditions and death In Indian culture, death is viewed as a natural part of the life cycle and rebirth, and it is associated with some customs and rituals ( Prince, 2021) . The concept of reincarnation (samsara) is common and central among Indians, and the objective is to achieve liberation from the cycle (moksha) through good karma. The Hindus for instance, believe that death is a significant transition point from one life to another based on the deeds performed by the deceased while they were alive. This is the concept of reincarnation and karma ( Prince, 2021) .
