PS124 Unit 9 Discussion Good afternoon, everyone. The psychological problem that I have chosen for this unit's discussion is social anxiety disorder. The best psychotherapy technique for treating this is cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT. Cognitive behavioral therapy teaches you different ways of thinking, behaving and reacting to situations that make you feel anxious (U.S. DHHS. 2022). When it comes to social anxiety disorder, social skills are highly important, and the CBT can teach you these social skills. Exposure therapy is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy that focuses on facing certain situations that have been avoided. The treatment modality that I believe is best for social anxiety is group therapy. At first this can be intimidating for people with social anxiety, but it allows them to “practice” how they react in social situations outside of therapy. They will be able to find what works for them in these situations. Group therapy for people with social anxiety helps them build new relational patterns and responses to situations that give them anxiety (Ball. 2020). I personally think that a person's willingness to participate really helps when it comes to psychological therapy. If they are reluctant to the whole idea, they will not be as open to share as what they would be if they are willing to go. What does not help with psychological therapy is a bad relationship between the client and the therapist. If the client does not trust the therapist, or thinks the therapist does not have their best interest in mind, this can cause hesitation from the client. References Ball, D. (2020, Sep. 22).
