DIAGNOSIS The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), published in 2015, defines substance use disorder (SUD) as a problematic pattern of substance use leading to clinically significant impairment or distress. It includes a range of cognitive, behavioral, and physiological symptoms that indicate ongoing substance use despite negative consequences. The severity of SUD is categorized as mild, moderate, or severe based on the number of symptoms presented. It's important to address the symptoms associated with the client's heavy former heroin use. These symptoms may include physical effects such as withdrawal symptoms, cognitive impairments, mood disturbances, cravings, and difficulties with impulse control.
