However some babies learn to roll to move before they walk and then learn to crawl. The rate of development refers to time given for the average development of a child; this includes both the physical and cognitive development of a child which is expected at that age. However not all children follow this pattern, for e.g. Some babies learn to walk before the age of 1 year, whilst other learns closer to the milestone age of 2 – 3 years. Development is often referred to on a timeline and is broken down in ages. As development is more rapid in early years the milestones start by being quite close together before becoming further apart as baby becomes a child and then a young adult.

The development process involves learning and mastering skills like sitting, walking, talking, skipping at an early stage to understanding emotions and socially acceptable behavior at later stage. Children learn these skills which are referred to as “milestones” during different stage. For example, one milestone is learning to talk. Most children learn this skill between the ages of 12 and 24 months. I should note, everyone develops at different rate; therefore, it’s important to closely monitor our children.
