This could be that they are treated worse than the way individuals are usually treated. It also involves the initial reaction or interaction that is taken place towards the group or the group leader, this also includes the behavior towards them. It also means that the members of the discriminated group are restricted from opportunities or privileges that are available to other groups. This leads to exclusion for the discriminated groups. Discrimination could be based on: sex, race, ethnicity, religion, colour of skin, class, caste, status, nationality, belief, language, orientation, gender, identity, age, health and other status.

In America’s history, each race has been portrayed as inferior or inferior, because of one’s skin color, or the beliefs of a culture. Oppression In early America varied in some ethnicities. Some races didn’t even have any civil liberties at all, they were not allowed to vote, not even allowed to become professionals. This was to keep everyone that was not of the superior race below them. Even though they are classified as U.S citizens. In most areas, the ruling race is the upper white class that runs the system, and have a disproportionate amount of power. In other areas, it may not be the white race, but it is still the race that makes up the majority. Last but not least discrimination. Discrimination is, “Positive or Negative behavior towards another person’s based on the person’s group membership.” (Schacter, P.384) I resized I discriminated against both lawyers. The reason I discriminated against the lawyer whose wife just got of the mental hospital is because I thought maybe if his wife just got of the mental hospital he will need to take care of her. I also thought that maybe he has a little crazy in him. I also noticed that a lot of the members in my group chose to discriminate against the narcotic pusher, because he’s into drugs and that’s “bad”.

The United States has been a super power for decades, and since America has always involved themselves in other countries' problems. Instead of isolationism, the country has practiced getting involved. Since the Monroe Presidency, America has been named the World's police force. Dispelling anarchists, and stopping coos, the united states portrays itself as the world protector. Since Monroe, some Americans have felt that isolation is the way to go, and most feel that it is our right to offer assistance. Two recent incidents, Operation Desert Storm and The War in Bosnia have allowed the United States to show off it's strength, both on the military and political level. How race determined who was in and who was out. As Dickerson states “if race is real and not just a method for the haves to decide who will be have-nots, then all Europeans immigrants, from Ireland a to Greece, would have been “white” the moment they arrived here. Instead, as documented in David Roediger’s excellent Working Towards Whiteness, they were long considered inferior, nearly subhuman, and certainly not white” (69). This shows how race wasn’t about common culture or history but a concept to decide what race is good enough to be consider “white” or better than others. Even though the Europeans where the same race or color of the other people who considered themselves Americans or “white” they were still discriminated for being different and immigrants like everybody else. But soon they realized that identifying them self as being white gave them some sort of hierarchy. It gave them more class compared to the other races. As Debra Dickerson said, “If you were neither black nor Asian nor Hispanic, eventually you could become white, invested with enforceable civil rights and the right to exploit-and hate-nonwhites” (69). Being identify as white gave the power to have privileges that non-whites will never have since they are not the same color. Throughout the centuries the “White” people have been known to think of themselves as being superior because of their color. If we look back at the time when the White Europeans came to this country they saw no reason to apply rules of honor to people they considered savages because they looked and acted different. Some might call this kind of thinking Social Darwinism where the “White” race is superior and destined to rule over all others. Clearly, the Native Americans were discriminated because of their color, which resulted in economic deprivation. However, now they play a huge role in our communities.

Americas “role” of today is involves a lot of things. They are currently the biggest economy on the planet; they have the biggest military force of all and are also the world’s number one superpower, closely followed by Russia and China. There are`s a lot of things that America havehas to do, have responsibility over and respond to. They are kind of like an example on of how countries should be, though many disagree on with that. But the reason for it is because of the economy. Loads ofMany brands of both clothing and other luxurious trademarks originate from America. They are on the big scalepredominantly a “stable” country and may be perceived asare somewhat peacekeepers. I think that maybe they also think of themselves as these “peacekeepers” or “allies of justice”. And I also think that many other also think like this.

Another concept of sociology that I felt that I could relate to is ethnocentrism. Ethnocentrism " a tendency to use our own groups way of doing things as a yard stick for judging others( Henslin, 37.)"Being Puerto Rican and growing up in a Caucasian society, I felt because of my culture that I should try to associate with my same race or people of my same ethnicity. Because of this I found myself feeling as if my race was better in some way, but then I learned that was normal for every race. Because of this I feel I can relate to the term ethnocentrism.

It is human nature to categorize things; it makes life easier to navigate knowing what is what. Race is one of those ways people categorize to make themselves feel more comfortable, by pointing out the differences and similarities between people it is easier to see where you belong and how well you fit in a certain situation. The conception of race is created by those who are dominant in society. Just how history is written by the winners, race is constructed by those who have more power—in this case (and all cases honestly) are Europeans.
