Most people have come across animals used for entertainment purposes, whether it be in zoos or theme parks like Seaworld. Zoos and establishments like Seaworld attract millions of people year round, because what is more interesting than seeing an elephant, or an orca whale up close? In our society, is has become common for the public to travel to these types of places. They are seen as the perfect place to vacation for a day, or to just spend time with family. Children especially love to see exotic animals in person, rather than just reading about them, or watching shows about them. People do not often think that the animals they see in captivity are abused, or have low standards of living. However, the truth is that the lives animals have …show more content…
After conducting a survey at Middleboro High School, the results were 95% confident that between 52-73% of students do not believe that zoos and Seaworld obtain animals ethically (Vilk, Jessica). The fact that over half do not trust the tactics that are used to collect animals reveals that the public is slowly loosing their trust for these establishments, and that the truth about the conditions that animals are forced to endure is coming out. Right from the start, it is inhumane to remove orcas from their natural habitat just so that they can be placed in an amusement park, but the tactics capturers use is worse. In the 1970s, ninety or more orca whales were obtained at Puget Sound after being stalked for miles and then herded into a three acre long net. In order to force the whales into the net, several explosives, speedboats, and airplanes were used. At this time, calves who would normally spend much more time with their families were torn away from their mothers, and entire family groups were broken up. A man who participated in the capture recounts how, to this day, he still hears the screams of the whales in his mind. Out of all these whales, at least five were sent to Seaworld parks all around the world, and all except one whale named Lolita died within a short period of time (“The Heartbreaking Real Life Capture of Orcas for Seaworld and Miami Seaquarium”). Zoos have also been known to remove animals from their natural habitats when they would have been much better remaining where they were. For example, in 2003 the San Diego Wild Animal Lowry Park Zoo captured eleven endangered wild African Elephant ("Zoos: Pitiful Prisons”) . It would be vital to the African Elephant population that those eleven elephants remained in the wild so that they species could hopefully grow and become stronger. However, the zoo made the decision to rip them from their homes during a time when they most needed to be in the wild. This choice was unethical because it could create further issues for the struggling species. Taking the elephants so that they could be an attraction in a zoo is not a valid reason for removing them from their homes. Normally in the wild, African Elephants live in massive family groups, and each member develops a close bond. Female elephants keep lifelong relationships with their female calves and with other relatives. When they are captured, usually the entire family is not taken together, so the bond are forcefully severed. The separation is incredibly stressful to the elephants, which are known to be very emotional creatures (“The Social Lives of Elephants”). If this is the way that zoos capture elephants, it is the same way that they take other animals as well. Unless the animal is in imminent danger, it should not be removed from its home. And if that is the case, it should be sent to
Anderson’s “Orca Behavior and Subsequent Aggression Associated with Oceanarium Confinement” states that, “a fundamental refocusing of our relationship with orcas is warranted, in favor of a new era characterized by mutual friendship, understanding, and much greater appreciation of these remarkable creatures than has been the case to date” (Anderson). In 1961, the practice of capturing wild orca whales to use for entertainment and educational purposes in amusement parks began; however, the captors knew little about the social complexity and strength of orcas. During this time, investors saw this magnificent animal as the proper investment to allocate revenue during the boom of amusement parks. After nearly forty years of orca captivity, researchers begin to unravel the nature of orca whales, and scientists now raise the question of if these powerful and intelligent mammals belong in captivity. Captors argue that captivity provides insight on a species is nearly impossible to study in the wild and promotes respect for the species. Activists and scientists plead that due to scientific data it is senseless to hold captive such a highly intelligent animal. Although activists and scientists create a convincing argument against orca captivity, millions of people flock to see orcas in captivity proving that
Most people today have visited or at least heard of the popular tourist attraction, Seaworld. These tourists may think of it as a place to see marine animals do trick, like killer whales interacting with humans in a fun and entertaining way- but do we ever stop to think about the treatment or feelings of these creatures? After visiting Seaworld and seeing the famous Shamu, the thought of how living in captivity affects the animal had not crossed my mind. After researching I am now extremely concerned with the way these whales are impacted by spending their lives in bathtubs and forced to do tricks for food, all while humans are blindly funding this billion dollar business.
"People always wonder whether I believe SeaWorld should be closed down. I always say no. They have tremendous financial resources and could play a key role in creating sea sanctuaries which could be a profit-making endeavor. I believe people would flock to a site where a killer whale is being a killer whale for the first time -- something infinitely more satisfying than seeing a killer whale dance the Macarena." - Gabriela Cowperthwaite. Cowperthwaite, the director of the documentary film Balckfish, is one of many that urges for change at the infamous marine park SeaWorld. For years on end SeaWorld has been a place of family fun and amazement; using one animal in particular as their spokesman and main attraction, Killer Whales. However, in recent years that image has gotten more than just a meager makeover. Over the past six years, following the tragic death of Dawn Brancheau, SeaWorld and the captivity of Killer Whales has been under serious scrutiny. There have been several findings of how captivity negatively affects these great creatures and the conversation of keeping Killer whales has only been gaining momentum. It is clear that the death of Dawn Brancheau is what sparked societies ideological shift, yet another key part in the start of this discourse is, without a doubt, the release of Gabriela Cowperthwaite 's documentary film Blackfish.
Finally, I will give reason to why people need to realize the damage SeaWorld is doing to the
If you have ever been to Seaworld you would have had to go see the Killer whales in fact its one of the top attractions there. Through the eyes of a child, these gentle giants seem to be happy, healthy, and enjoying a playful game with their trainers. The question is are they really happy, do they get treated the right way, and why have there been deaths and injuries. Many people wonder about these things and after the movie Blackfish came out more and more people began to question how well Seaworld treats their animals. “The truth is that Sea World keeps its animals for entertainment and money and helps no one but themselves.”- Animal Legal Defense Fund
Zoos, SeaWorld, and circuses are places for families to enjoy entertainment. However, most people do not realize how the animals in each of these establishments are handled. Yes, they all bring in revenue and present the tricks these animals can do, yet these places preform detrimental acts to the animals. For example, the killer whales at SeaWorld are sometimes starved if they do not perform the way the trainer wants them to. In comparison, circuses torture lions and tigers until they are submissive to how the show-people want them to act. Zoos do not necessarily torture their animals, but it is proven the animals live much shorter lives in captivity. “Lives of animals in the wild versus captivity are literally worlds apart, and even the best captive facilities can’t recreate the conditions of the wild — not exactly. Most don’t even try, leaving animals in tiny enclosures with no socialization, enrichment or joy. Captivity is unnatural and unhealthy” (Sentenac). People are starting to recognize the danger of continuing these practices, but there’s a long way to go.Furthermore, animals in all of these places have suffered many traumatizing and even deadly events. There was a recent report that two circus lions, whom had severe head injuries, were killed by poachers who snuck into the sanctuary. “Last year poachers bypassed an advanced security system at a lodge near the town of Tzaneen in the Limpopo province, killing two lions by feeding them poisoned meat” (Graham).
Since 1961, 157 orcas, or killer whales, have been ripped from their homes and shoved into captivity. 127 of these orcas are now dead. With the number of captured orcas plus the number of those born into captivity, The W.D.C. (Whale and Dolphin Conservation) reports that, “At least 162 orcas have died in captivity, not including 30 miscarried or stillborn calves” ( “The Fate”1). Out of the 127 taken into captivity, 44 have died in SeaWorld. There are currently 58 orcas residing in 14 marine parks in eight different countries. 24 of those orcas are held in SeaWorld’s three parks in the United States. Since 2002, 14 have been taken out of the wild and put into these marine parks. (“The Fate”1) It is not fair for these innocent creatures to be physically and mentally manipulated and damaged. Such brutality would not be condoned if it were targeted towards a human, and it should not be condoned when targeted toward an animal. Orca whales should not be held in captivity because they are forced to live in subpar conditions, they are mistreated while in captivity, and they are led to aggressive behavior.
SeaWorld opened on March 15, 1959 and has been a huge visitor attraction. Ever since the Blackfish documentary was released in 2013, SeaWorld dropped sales by 50% in the year 2014. Even though SeaWorld is still in business and training the orcas, I think SeaWorld should be closed down because of the whales’ health and the risks of the trainers.
“If you love something, set it free.” This is a quote that has circulated for years, and nowhere else is it more applicable than in SeaWorld’s parks. Trainers and corporate alike claim a deep love for the animals they keep captive, but in recent years, the topic of holding orca whales in captivity has become more controversial than ever before. The CNN documentary “Blackfish” brought the conditions Seaworld provides for its orcas to the public eye in a way that had not been done before, which led to much public outrage. The containment of orca whales for educational and entertainment purposes has, in almost every way, been brought into question. Ranging from the physical and psychological damages they experience, the issues in their family structures, and the dangers that their human trainers experience, orca whales are not fit to be kept in captivity.
In 2013 a documentary called “Blackfish” (a documentary explaining the illnesses of orcas and the weaknesses of seaworld) was released to inform the world why seaworld was not all fun and games. In fact after the release seaworld lost $31.6 million the second-quarter income. Just one of the many things “Blackfish” told us is that capturing the orcas doesn't always go as smoothly
Not many people think about how immoral it is for us humans to take animals from the wild and hold them captive for entertainment. Captive animals are often deprived of everything that is natural and important to them, and they experience captivity-related health problems as a result.
As a young child there has been so many commercials about how SeaWorld is such an amazing place for marine life animals, yet what we do not know is that most of these animals have been held in captivity against their will. Just think about it, these animals’ are made to perform day in and day out for a huge crowd, yet we do not stop and think about what it would be like if we ourselves were held in captivity. Although awareness needs to be brought to this issue, it can make this situation a touchy subject. However, awareness does need to be brought to attention of people who support these amusement parks. The life of orca whales held in captivity are dangerous and have suffered a great amount of distress.
The most relevant issues discussed in Blackfish and SeaWorld’s response are the health of the Orcas in captivity, the Orcas’ aggressive behavior and the trainer’s death. Blackfish and Sea World’s response in Blackfish, Ethos Pathos and Logos are used to present information about the health, treatment about the Orcas in captivity and the safety of the trainers. Through blackfish and SeaWorld’s views, Ethos
Many people worldwide love to take vacations to SeaWorld to watch in awe as aquatic life present tricks and entertain them, but in order for the park to get these animals to behave in this manner “they scrape the animals of their freedom, their lives, and their dignity. The animals are abused and placed into unsanitary enclosures that are not safe, and are deprived from any glimpse of sunlight for over 14 hours a day, and that’s 98 hours or more a week!” (78). The process of following these evil acts cause the animals to transform into atrocious beasts. “Over three trainers have been killed by SeaWorld’s animals and multiple visitors have been attacked. Everyone needs to realize what this park is doing to their animals and their employees” (83). Not to mention, the public should pursue forward into the strikes taking place at this concentration camp, because by proceeding there you continue to allow the evildoers to torment the animals the way they still are today. Also, by no longer continuing to proffer your support we all can put an end to the animals’ misery. Instead of visiting these imprisonments where victimized animals are forcefully controlled like puppet rags, hitch a ticket to paradise and descry these untamed animals full with energy packed action in their natural habitat where they’re jubilant, joyous, ambitious, and carefree. SeaWorld is not their “home sweet home” they look forward to on a
Think about how we will look back on our cruel forms of entertainment in the future. Will we be proud of the way we treated these great animals, with abuse as neglect? Today we turn our heads away from reality and what happens behind the scenes of animal entertainment. However, we can’t turn our heads forever. Around the world, there is so much more to animal entertainment than what meets the eye. These animals have been torn away from their beautiful, natural homes and brought to a prison of concrete. In these prisons, they are beaten, starved and tortured all for our money and entertainment. These animals lives should not be taken from them for us. Our money and happiness should not be worth these animal’s lives. Circus, theme park and zoo animals all suffer from aggression towards trainers, mental disabilities and physical injuries. These animals should not have to suffer any longer.
