Research from “College athletics programs make a lot of money, send little to academics” the University of Texas at Austin brings in a average of 184 million dollars each year through athletics. The question that floats everyone's mind is why are the athletes not getting paid . Some believe paying them will no longer show value of the game. However others believe they should be paid because they dedicate their lives to the sport. The NCAA must recognize the benefits of compensating college athletics because, college athletics work hard everyday , makes the sport more competitive and helps players support themselves financially. A primary reason why is , college athletes work hard each week in and out of school. Research according to “How …show more content…
They graduate without a loan because they have a scholarship. On the other hand a salary will grant one to support themselves financially. One would believe that a player leading his team to a championship would never be starving himself however as declared in “How Much Does It Cost to go to College” “The University of Connecticut's Shabazz Napier recently told reporters he sometimes goes to bed "starving" because he can't afford food, despite that UConn's student-athlete guidelines include provisions for meal plans”(Sanderson,Allen). It can be assumed that life was hard because he played so much and got limited food which he he was granted by plans. One would believe that player leading his team to a championship According to “How Much Does It Cost to go to college” The costs of college can usually be broken down into three basic categories: tuition, books, and housing. Tuition is the cost of taking classes at a college. This amount varies the most widely between different colleges”(Wonderpolis.com). Granted that college athletics get paid they will be able to pay for all the different parts associated with college. Relating to Shabazz Napier he most likely had no money to spend on food because all his money was going towards his studies. Each student spends around 1,200 dollars a year just towards textbooks. Demonstrated in “College Athletics Programs Make a lot of Money, Send Little to Academics” when students are getting paid they will not have to stress about any financial issues instead they can work more on there game to improve themselves. This reveals that athletics are worried about paying off college tuition and could give less time towards
College sports are a phenomenon that keeps viewers coming back for more. Stated in an article on Money Nation the NCAA makes an estimated $1 billion per year and this number is still growing. What really is insane is that all that money is made off of college athletes, who don’t get a penny from that total number. The debate on whether or not college athletes should be paid has been around for decades and probably will still be here for years to come. Paying college athletes would make the teams unfair, change how hard players will work to get better, affect the amateurism of college sports, and lastly influence the athlete's willingness to participate in college sports.
After high school, some students decide to make the decision to go to college to further their education, earn a degree, have fun, and some, to play sports. College sporting events bring in money through tickets, jerseys, shirts, and other gear. The money made for all of these items and expenses go to paying coaches, the school, charities, utilities, and other expenses a school has to pay to have a sports team. Most college athletes are given scholarships to allow them not to have to pay for college or anything that comes with the college experience. Some athletes, that are good enough athletically, do not ever pay for tuition, living expenses, meal plans, books, and everything else a normal student would have to pay for. For some college athletes that is not enough. Some college athletes believe that they should get a paycheck based on the money that the school makes on putting on sporting events that these athletes are participating in. Other college athletes are satisfied with the scholarship given to them and do not seek additional money.
Some college athletic departments are as wealthy as professional sports teams. The NCAA has an average annual revenue of $10.6 billion dollars. College athletes should be paid because of the amount of revenue that they bring to their college. Each individual college should pay its athletes based on how much revenue they bring to the college in which they attend. The colleges that win their Division title, their Conference title, or the National championship, give bonuses to the Head coach of that team. If colleges have enough money to give bonuses to coaches, that means they have money that is left over for the athlete who gives them recognition to pay them. College athletes should be paid based solely upon the performance and success that they have.
College sports are big money makers now a days. For most universities, the athletic department serves as one of the main sources of cash flow. Athletes are used to create millions of dollars for the NCAA and the schools that they participate in, and never receive a penny. If we are talking about profit, if all bonds with the university were removed, an athletic department representing itself could compete with some of the most successful companies. So, why does the most important parts of the machine, the players, do not receive any money for their training and participation? The answer lies in the NCAA which keeps all the money and their practice of keeping all the revenue for future use. College athletes should be paid for their
college athletes are rewarded with and the actual revenues the NCAA is collecting. For this discrepancy college athletes need to be rewarded for their effort and should be given stipends. Television broadcasting contracts, shoe and apparel deals, and commercial advertising rake in billions of dollars for the NCAA because of the participation of college students in sports. Last year alone, the NCAA’s total revenue was $777 million. Although the NCAA claims that 98 cents to every dollar is redistributed back into schools athletic programs for things like student services for athletes and
The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) makes over $871 million dollars a year on college athletics. Some studies estimate as much as one billion dollars each year. A college university can make anywhere from several million dollars up to $120 million from their athletic programs. A college athlete gets paid nothing and yet a majority of their time and schedule is dictated by the sport they play. In the book Student Athlete’s Guide to College, author Hillary Abramson says, “If you’ve gotten to the college athletic level, you 're accustomed to making sacrifices to benefit your athletic career. In college these sacrifices only get harder.” (Abramson 8). In Dominic Alessi’s 5 Reasons Why NCAA Athletes Should be Paid, he points out that student athletes schedules are much harder than regular students schedules. “By late afternoon they have already put in a 10 hour work day.” (Alessi). Even though they are considered student athletes, the NCAA actually has rules which allow the athletes to miss class in order to fulfill their team obligations. College athletes should be paid because they spend a majority of their time with their sport, many colleges in the NCAA make a large amount of income from the sports programs, and it would help many athletes learn to be financially stable and help them in the real world as only a small fraction of college athletes turn professional and make a career
Over 85 percent of college athletes don’t make it to the next level, either because of injuris or waiting to long to enter the draft. So out of this percent players don’t even get there degree or finish school. “Players can also get lifelong injuries that colleges may do nothing to compensate for. Some argue Division I players receive a full scholarship plus access to top facilities and resources to make them superstars. But what percentage of college athletes go on to the pros? The NBA Draft only takes 60 players a year, and there are thousands of college players who do not have the opportunity to participate” (crimson article) .So there out of school with no money and no degree, this is when that payment comes in. so these players won’t end up homeless or have to move back in with their parents.Thousands of college players that earn a scholarship working hard and getting noticed. But what if they get to college and just flat out lose their ability? Most likely to lose the scholarship and not be able to continue. But getting a payment that can go towards that and even pay for all 4 years at that
"It's time for all sports fans to wake up and realize that the current system benefits only the elite few who continue to perpetuate the myth of amateur athletics." - Brian Frederick. Many people have been debating about wether NCAA athletics should be paid. Coaches and players are wanting to chose this due to the number of career-ending injuries which have left players with nothing. Some people think that if we start paying NCAA athletics, they will chose to go to the school that will pay them the most money instead of picking the schools with the nicest campus or the best education. While this may be true, NCAA athletes should be paid because schools make a lot of money, why not share it with the people who are risking their careers, players are not allowed to have a job, and people think that college sports are simpler and less corrupt.
What has become a reoccurring topic of debate within sports, is whether or not college athletes should be paid. When referring to college athletes the main focus is on basketball and football athletes. The sports of both basketball and football in the NCAA generate the most revenue amongst all other college sports. The combined profit of these two sports go through a trickling down process, in which the income is distributed amongst the other sports teams of the university. The ideal thing to expect is to pay all college athletes, the reality is that only football and basketball players will be paid.
Established in 1906, the NCAA is now accumulating around one billion dollars annually, and has made just over seven billion dollars since 2006. Since the establishment of the organization, the only money that has been offered to student athletes is in the form of a scholarship. As of right now, student athletes do not receive salaries, only some form of scholarships. If these student athletes were given salaries instead, it could go a long way. In an article from TheSportster, stated that “If college football players received decent middle class wages, many players would be able to send some money home, which would in turn encourage many parents to convince their sons that they should stay in school” (Craig Keolanui). Also, if the
The money that these programs bring in goes to pay for the facilities, training, and all other expenses. (usatoday.com) People tend to forget that most athletes tend to get paid in scholarships. Let’s not forget the experience an athlete gets while in college. Besides, an athlete plays college sports because of their passion, not because they make money from it. Here’s ten possible reasons why a college athlete shouldn’t be paid; college athletic programs cannot afford to pay college athletes, most elite college athletes receive sports scholarships (which is payment enough), playing college sports is a privilege, there is no fair way to pay college athletes, students are not professionals, paying students athletes will cause cuts elsewhere, the NCAA is a not-for-profit organization, college students are financially irresponsible, paying college athletes to play will not stop the corruption of the system, and paying college athletes would ruin
Some people believe that a scholarship should be payment enough. After all, a scholarship can be easily worth $15,000 - $25,000 or more per year, plus a career after college that can be worth a million dollars over a lifetime. Additionally, some student athletes receive all kinds of perks while they are in college, like staying at fancy hotels, being seen on national TV, and all of the notoriety that goes with being a star athlete. It’s hard to put a price tag on all of
College athletes don’t have to worry about paying for books, meals, or the sport equipment they use to work out with. They don’t need money to throw away on food because they possibly have a certain meal plan provided by their athletic trainers. College athletes still have time to get a job during the off-season. Many people have to pay for college and student athletes with scholarships are the lucky ones who
Time is money, everyone has heard this at least once in their lives. When it comes to college sports, it is more than relatable, depending on what side of the fence somebody is on. It has been estimated that your typical student athlete spends an average of 40 or more hours a week at practice. Most full time jobs offer 40 hours a week to their employees; some might say being a college athlete is a full time job. Take the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for example, their practices are far more intense and are taken
The NCAA’s greatest fear about paying student athletes is the money itself. They worry it will be spread thin between all the sports departments, but with all the money circulating around the college sports industry, they should not have any concerns. The two most popular college sports, football and men’s basketball, generate over $6 billion in annual revenue combined; more than the amount the National
