Corporal Punishment (Spanking) - A Parent's Choice
The term corporal punishment means the intentional infliction of pain on the body for purposes of punishment. "Spanking can be defined as the use of physical force aimed at causing children to experience pain but not injury, for the purposes of correction and control of youthful behavior"(http://www.123helpme.com/preview.asp?id=32539). Spanking is a controversial topic and should not be taken lightly.
As a child I was spanked when I did something wrong. My parents never left a mark on me what so ever. Being spanked taught me respect and kept me in line. The way my parents disciplined me, I think is an accepted method of punishment. I believe what parents do to their kids at home

Studies show that the age of the parents in relation to the child influences spanking behavior. The study shows that younger mothers spank much more frequently than older mothers; that younger children are spanked more than older children. The same study also says that higher levels of socioeconomic status are associated with the decreases in spanking. This study does not surprise me younger parents with less money undergo much more stress than older parents therefore they are more easily irritated by their children. Also spanking decreases as the parents age increases this could be because the parent is less motivated.
The child's personality directly influences the parent's ability to punish a child. Some children will only respond to physical punishment and others will respond to verbal punishment. If you spank your child there are eight steps to follow.

1) Tell the child that he or she is going to be spanked. A spanking should never be spontaneous.
2) Tell the child the reason for the spanking, he or she may already know why, but it's best that you verbally tell the child.
3) Let the child know that even though you are giving them a spanking you still love them.
4) Take the child into a private room such as a bathroom or bedroom, and close the door. A spanking should never be administered in front of
Spanking is subjective in the least. Most parents suggest that using spankings as a form of discipline is essential to the development of a compliant child. For most Americans, this truth is one of the core foundations of the American model home. “70% of mothers indicated they had spanked their child at least once by the time he or she was 2-years-old” (Lee, Altschul and Gershoff, 2015.) There are numerous amounts of evidence that point to the certainty that spanking is linked to child aggression. In,
Spanking is a fiercely debated social issue in many countries, such as the US, the United Kingdom, Canada, Israel, and Germany. There are questions over what intensity of pain is suitable until it crosses the threshold into abuse. Up until the mid-20th century it was perfectly okay in most communities for a spanking to cause a child to cry in pain throughout and have difficulty sitting down afterward, even resulting in stripes or bruises for days. Nowadays several think even mere redness of the skin abusive, while others would call it effective discipline. This causes questions as to whether children should be spanked. In addition, whether spanking is an effective method of discipline and at what point does it constitutes child abuse.
Have you ever been spanked as a kid and felt angry towards your parents? Did you feel they just hated you? Spanking is a form of corporal punishment which is a punishment intended to cause pain in many different ways. Corporal punishment started in slavery and led to schools and homes. Although many states have banned corporal punishment it is still allowed in 19 out of 50 states. Many adults will agree children just need a ‘good ol’e spanking’ and others will argue that it is a negative way to parent and causes more problems. Spanking children is not a proper way of parenting because it gives a negative effect on children.
Spanking in history was the typical punishment you would receive when you missed behave. Some fathers would take their belts off, make you grab a switch (a flexible tree branch that was used for punishment), a wooden spoon, or whatever was closest for the parent to grab. Spanking is defined as hitting a child on the bottom with an open hand. (Narvaez) All parents have had those moments when they are at their wits in with their children when they are being terrors, but instantly resorting to spanking is not the only resolution to get your children to listen. In fact, spanking your children may do more harm than good. Unfortunately, not all parents know the difference between abusing their children, and only spanking them one or two times. Abusing your children is never right, but spanking your child can be a form of abuse. Studies have shown that spanking may not
Even after years of research, the issue of whether spanking is an adequate discipline strategy or damaging to children remains a controversial topic. According to Kazdin and Benjet (2003) the definition of spanking is “. . . hitting a child with an open hand on the buttocks or extremities with the intent to discipline without leaving a bruise or causing physical harm (p. 100). In addition, according to Maguire-Jack, Gromoske and Berger (2012) only a few studies propose that spanking is an effective form of discipline. On the other hand, there is more evidence to show that spanking is an unsuccessful form of discipline that can led to unwanted consequences (p. 1960). I personally do not take a stance in this topic because I can see valid points from both parties. Although, I believe that the way the punishment is presented to the child is extremely important. For example, I feel that the child should know why he or she is punished and what is expected of them thereafter.
The main reason that parents use spanking as a discipline technique is because it is what they received when they were children. However, in many cases spanking has nothing to do with helping the child. It is used as a quick solution to stop negative behavior with no real regard for the long-term outcome. Parents often spank their children because they themselves are angry. These parents simply cannot handle a situation and take it out on their child. Spanking might be more accepted if it was the only, or the most successful, form of discipline, but it is not. Spanking is simply a short-term fix of a child 's discipline problems. Two of the widely used alternatives to spanking are the time-out and restriction punishments. Time-out is most effective when administered to children under ten years of age, and a restriction mostly benefits children over ten years old. Both of these methods, while effective, also have a positive influence on the child, they teach the child discipline without the use of force, help the child
The common misconception that spanking is a form of child abuse affects the proper discipline of today's youth. Some parents are actually afraid to discipline their own children using the same method of belief from their own upbringing. Who is correct in the notion of right and wrong discipline? Is there such a thing as a correct way to spank your child? In my opinion, there is. So, my goal is to show that if the
94% of parents said they have spanked their child once within the ages 3 to 4 (Corporal Punishment Beneficial, Should Be Parents' Choice). Many people feel punishing a child is up to the parents. Many arguments believe that spanking a child teaches them discipline. Just as a child shutting their fingers in a door, teaches them to not put their fingers there. Or touching hot water on the stove makes them become aware of hot objects on the stove.
While this review of literature on spanking children is limited in finding evidence in supporting spanking, the research available that opposes spanking is rather compelling. The findings from the reviewed articles provide advice to parents, both new and long-time, on how to discipline their children if they want their children to have the best outcomes. The studies that have been reviewed are only a small amount of what has been published regarding the negative impacts that spanking can have on children. Additionally, this research may be a start for a move in society to begin viewing spanking as a negative child-rearing practice. While there is a lot more research that could be reviewed on this topic, high levels of aggression, behavioral problems, and
Other parents believe that spanking their child will only make them listen to them more. Well, this is idea is relatively false. When a bond is broken between two people, that creates trust issues. The child will feel that they cannot trust their parent. They will feel fearful to be spanked or to be hurt in any other way. This will cause the child to actually step back from the relationship because they are unsure of their own safety. This leads to the child having aggressive expectations. The child is prepared to aggress first before they are aggressed
Parents should not spank children regardless of their age or what they have done. Most parents I have seen do not verbally say “I spank my child” but it does occur more than what is seen. It is not an everyday occurrence for me to see a child being spanked in public. However it does occur more frequently in bathrooms or behind closed doors. I am willing to bet it happens a lot more than meets the eye. When I do see spankings in public it makes me uncomfortable. Even though it is an arrestable offence to hit a child a certain way, parents still do it.

Spanking has been a controversial topic among many parents. Some believe it is just a form of discipline and is okay, while others believe that this is abuse or violence and it will harm the child in the long run.
All and all you should calm down or think first before you start the beating because beating causes a lot of issues.Spanking your child could turn them away from you,and cause behavior problems.Parents shouldn't spank if they have major depression, major marital problems, or substance abuse problems. They shouldn't spank in desperation or in anger—that's what leads to the negative outcomes, like increased violence, associated with corporal punishment. Never spank a child when you are angry. When you are emotionally charged, it is in that moment of anger, fear, confusion, etc. that you are likely to hurt the child and that is when excessive corporal punishment is most likely to occur. If you are emotionally charged, you need to take a time out and pull yourself together.Never spank a child when you are angry.
Spanking has become an arguably debatable form of discipline. According to a study at the University of Texas, the more children are spanked, the more likely they are to defy their parents (“Spanking: Pros and Cons”). There is a connection between spanking during the childhood and mental health diagnoses later in life. There are other options of discipling your child than spanking them, especially because all children can take spanking differently. Parents should not spank their child because it showers that being “stronger” is right, demonstrates that older people have a right to hit younger people, and gives the examples that violence solves all problems.
