1. Describe three non-verbal communication techniques to maintain relationships. 2. This is a role-play activity to be conducted in pairs. With a partner, discuss the following quote from Stephen R. Covey: ‘Strength lies in differences, not in similarities.’ What is your interpretation of this quote? What does it mean? How can it be applied in work practice? Your partner may have different ideas. Demonstrate a range of verbal and non-verbal communication techniques for constructive and respectful discussion as you exchange ideas. A signed observation by either an approved third party or the assessor will need to be included in these activities as proof of completion. Ans: The three non-verbal communication techniques to maintain relationships are; Facial Expression: The facial expression such as happiness, sadness, anger and fear helps a lot in conveying a message. These facial expressions are similar all over the world but non- verbal communication and behaviour varies hugely between the cultures in the world.Since the look on a person’s face is noticed , before we hear ,facial expression contributes a lot in a successfully non-verbal communication . Gestures: Gestures such as waving, pointing, and using fingers to indicate signals are commonly used in our daily life. These are deliberate movement used to convey signals without uttering a word. Gestures varies as per professions, cultures, nations, person etc.For an instance if waving my hand towards my friends
There are several basic channels in which emotions can be communicated. These channels can be classified as non-verbal communication and verbal communication. Examples of non-verbal communication can include facial expressions, eye contact, paralinguistics, and body language/movements. Non-verbal communications, however, are more difficult to analyze. (Mehrablan, 1972) Facial expressions are the first thing we see when we look at a person. If some is smiling, one could assume that the person is happy. If someone is frowning, the person is most likely feeling sad. Paralinguistics basically is the way something is said. This includes things like tone
Our society also relies on language as its major bases for communication. Our ability to communicate apart from our words plays an important part in our daily lives. We often disregard the power of body language and our facial gestures. We are expected to portray our body language and facial gestures
Non-verbal communication | 1. Posture. This is the way in which someone holds their self, the way the stand etc. 2. Facial expression. This is the way someone’s face responds to an action or words. For e.g.…if someone was told something they like they would generally be wide eyed and smiling. |

What are the functions of nonverbal messages? ● Substitute ● complement verbal messages: adds to verbal message, improves clarity and understanding ● contradict: non verbal behavior not reflecting verbal message 2. Know the different codes (i.e., kinesics, haptics, proxemics, vocalics, chronemics, and self- presentation cues). Code 1 - Kinesics / Use of the body ● Gestures ○ Emblems - gestures with explicit meaning and dictionary definitions ○ Illustrator - gestures that accompany verbal message ○ Adaptors - Touching behaviors that reveal internal states such as anxiety ■ self adaptors ■ object adaptors - handling of objects ■ other adaptors - touching other people ● Eye contact / Oculesics ○ both people are looking directly into each others eyes ● Functions ○ regulates interaction ○ monitors interaction ○ signals cognitive activity ○ expresses involvement
There are eight key forms of nonverbal communications used on a daily basis. These forms can affect the way people view another person; however, without understanding the forms of nonverbal communication there is certain to be a lot of misinterpretations. Cultural and language differences are a common reason for miscommunication. When communicating with people in different cultures, a person should be extremely aware of the hand gestures and nonverbal communication tools they are using. Many of the hand gestures used in the United States that mean good things, mean offensive and profane things to other cultures. Nonverbal communication is described as body language, hand gestures, and facial expressions. It is known that people reveal more information through nonverbal communication, than words alone to get a point across. There will always be some interaction between two or more people that everyone’s

Read the following quotes and interpret what you think is being expressed. Write 50 to100 words per quote and support your responses. If you wish to include references, please format your responses consistent with APA guidelines.
Verbal communication is considered to be through speech or language; and, it has been estimated that “no more than 30 to 35% of the social meaning of a conversation or an interaction is carried by the words” (Birdwhistell, 1970, p.197). Nonverbal communication, wordless cues, would therefore, make up the remaining percentage of the exchange of the interaction. Facial expressions and body language are two major contributors to nonverbal communication. According to Darwin, within a species, the act of expressing emotions is specific to itself; there is no difference with changes in culture or environment (1872). Within body language, biological motion plays a large role in the development of social communication. It provides information about an individual's sex, emotion, and even intentions (Annaz, 2012). Additionally there are verbal and nonverbal behavioural cues, such as eye contact and characteristics of
Facial expressions, body language, tone of voice, and eye contact, are very important channels of information that are communicated in Face-to-face interaction. According to Lewis 2006 (as cited in Kathy, 2006), facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice are innate. So, they are needed and expected by the brain, which will suffer to communicate without these channels of information. Lewis (2006) assert that a misinterpretation might take place if these channels are unavailable. He also claimed that it is impossible to embrace this experience through texts by thinking that we can know someone, simply because, visual information and subtle emotions such as smiles and wrinkles are vital to communicate remotely, except that, these do

Avoid those tricks that can distract your attention, such as pointing to others, feeling restless, trickling, teasing hair, rubbing hands or turning ring.
There are two types of communication that teachers use to penetrate into the minds of the learners-
When we think of communication some people automatically think of verbal ways which includes speaking about ideas, stating opinions, and expressing thoughts. This simple communication process is a two-way method in which one sends the message through conversation and other person receives the message by listening. To have an effective conversation the message must be interpreted successfully and used in a fitting manner. Another aspect of communication people use is known as nonverbal communication. A person can communicate by their facial expressions, signals, pointing, writing, drawing, touching, eye contact are the major and valuable components of communication. I most commonly use the facial expression nonverbal communication technique but majority of the time I do not realize I am doing it. I am often told my facial expression reveals exactly what I am thinking. I have made a point to make myself aware of showing my feelings on my face. Not all nonverbal expressions are bad some can help the person you are communicating with feel comfortable with a simple smile or nodding of the head showing you are in agreement with what they are
