Ashley Ness Pre-AP English II Burgess 1st Hour 10th Grade Pre-AP Summer Reading Assignment The Book Thief Part 1 In the beginning of The Book Thief Death says that he is the person going to be narrating the story. Death also says that we as the readers are going to die. Death takes the soul of Liesel’s little brother, “A six-year-old boy died in the third carriage.” (Page 20) I predict that as Death tells the story of Liesel Meminger he is going to take other peoples lives that are close with Liesel along with her life. I also predict that Death give meaning to as story that people might not have read in the first place. Death might give this story a light of its own with his descriptions. Were they holes for falling into, or patches of extra darkness for hiding in?” (Page 367) This phrase states that there were shadows made by clouds. That’s it’ but what intensifies this passage is the personification. You can’t bury shadows, but by saying this it lets you imagine that the shadows were so dark it looked as if you could fall into them. Another thing that gives this phrase meaning is when it says, “extra darkness for hiding in…” the first thing that you think of is Liesel hiding in shadows with the dusky grass beneath her feet. Part 8 “Dominoes are any of 28 small oblong pieces marked with zero to six dots in each half” (Merriam-webster.com) “Together they would watch everything that was so carefully planned collapse, and they would all smile at the beauty of destruction.” (Page 408) Dominoes symbolize the war. Hitler had everything carefully planned out from how to get rid of the Jews to how to win the war that he had started, but like the dominoes his plan collapsed. While his plan collapsed, people all over the world smiled and cheered at the “beauty of destruction” that had happened. Part

Over the course of reading The Book Thief, readers will come to know about Markus Zusak’s constant use of descriptive words, figurative language, and character plots throughout the story. In one particular part of the novel, Zusak shows an example of all three of these points to support one of the many central themes he gives us. This moment allows Zusak to go into explicit detail to make a point about the significance of the moment to the reader. In The Book Thief, Zusak uses vocabulary that evokes recklessness and stealthiness, personification about books, and Liesel’s internal

It was noon when suddenly on a train Liesel’s brother died. On that same day Liesel said goodbye to her mother forever. Soon Liesel joins her foster parents, Hans and Rosa Hubermann. A couple days later Max arrives, a grown man who was a jew.
