Looking back at the first couple days in ENC 1101 I was absolutely overwhelmed and stressed about the amount of essay’s that were going to be done. I looked at the syllabus which provided all the work that was going to be done and I wanted to jump of a bridge. Not being fully prepared in high school didn’t help me with my panic. I truly felt in the beginning that it was going to be too hard and I was not going to make it. Through the class I learned many things, the first paper was a minor headache but it really helped me with thoughts, how an essay supposed to flow, and the style of a paper. Once I received a grade for the first paper, I was actually stunned and motivated. Being on the right track opened up my mind and I felt confident going …show more content…
One thing that still frightens me is plagiarism. I am afraid that I plagiarize without meaning to do so. I still have difficulty citing and placing punctuations in the right place. Citing work in my essay is always a stopping point for me, I tend to get stuck when, is time to cite a source within my essay. Also I have trouble citing at the end on the work cited page. The main concern for me is putting the right punctuation mark where they need to go. The improvements that I need to make are simple. Learning how to properly cite a source in an essay and citing it at the end. The right punctuation is something I need to be careful with and I need to work on. I feel that’s what I need to worry about the most. I also often get stuck and thoughts are often blank. I hate when I write and I lose my thoughts and become stuck. Overall I feel confident and I feel that I will succeed in upcoming courses that deal with essays. Professor Vinson was great help when I needed to understand something. He was also very flexible with the deadline to turn in the essay, which was great help for me. Overall my confidence level is really high. I am just afraid that in the future I won’t get a professor so flexible and I won’t be given the help that Professor Vinson provided me
I was pushed constantly to work harder at my writing. I studied and practiced several new techniques and methods for prewriting and organizing the essays I found so hard to create. At first, I had quite a few bad days and quite a few subpar essays. My grades would vary greatly from paper to paper. This really scared me, as I hoped to keep myself from drastically dropping in my grades. Yet, I wanted to maintain my grade point average so I had no choice but to succeed and impress around every corner. I began to pour in, even more, work and apply all of the newly learned skills from that class into my mind. I hoped that soon I would be able to find a system for writing that helped me form proper
Some areas where I need to improve include transitions between paragraphs, being to repetitive, and my conclusions. This class has definitely helped me make my transitions better; however they still could use some improvement. I have to make sure that the reader can comprehend my thought process and that my transitions do not get in the way of the flow of the paper. In some of the rough drafts for my essays I could not find links between paragraphs at all but after work shopping in class I believe that they have significantly improved. I also need to make sure that I do not repeat the same ideas or words too many
Before I began this course I thought that I was a really good writer and that I would strive in ENC 1101 with ease. I assumed this because I was always getting good grades in my previous English courses in high school. Most of my papers in high school I had got a high B or an A. But I got a big awakening when I turned in my first paper in ENC 1101. This is because I had assumed that I was going to get a good grade because I thought I had answered all the things that were listed on the rubric that you handed us. When I received my first paper back I was on the borderline tears that I had got a C. At first I did not understand what I had did wrong. After going back and looking at my teacher's comments I realized that I needed to provided more
Throughout this semester we have had to write many types of essays. Although this is a college English class there is still room for improvement. I made much improvement during the semester of the class. I was able to identify my weaknesses. I learned how to make improvements to the areas I was having problems in. Although each essay we did was different I was able to begin with one essay and throughout the semester turn it into two other essays. I was able to change my style of writing to fit the type of audience I was working with. I will continue to work on my writing and keep improving it.
The final weeks of my first semester in college are coming to an end. My Columbus State english class has written a total of three projects, and a total of four papers. There are a lot of grammatical issues that, at the beginning of the year, I had issues on. However, I have improved on these errors drastically, and have become a better writer because of it. Even though I am still working on many aspects of my writing, I do believe that I have become a better writer. I believe that my biggest issues while writing are run on sentences, making a strong thesis statement, and having quotes stand alone at the beginning of a paragraph.
In my future writing, I can improve by focusing on the areas that have been brought to my attention, such as fragmented sentence structures, capitalization, punctuation, and MLA formatting mistakes. I hope to enhance my writing skills through better planning, drafting, proofreading, and revising. I can become a better writer by building upon my current writing abilities and paying more attention to my
Throughout this paper, I will inform you of ENC 1101 from why I’m nervous about taking this class and what is causing me to worry. I will tell you about two references from the syllabus that stood out to me and why. Last I will advise you if I’m ready for this course and if I feel I’m prepared.
The content that has helped me immensely throughout my semester is the feedback that I got on every major essay from Professor Michael Robbins. But the one that impacted me the most was the feedback giving to me on the research analysis essay. His feedback lead me in the right direction. After I turned in my first draft I felt like I didn’t even know what I turned in. After
When you are working on your second draft make sure to follow the MLA Format Instructions. If you have any questions about the MLA Format you can always refer to last week's reading, OWL. I also suggest that you should send your essay into the Washington State University Writing Center for them to ketch and grammar or punctuation errors. I do see that there is a few function errors such as: “Progress has been made but as the…” it should be Progress has been made, but as the…”. Or,
To begin with, my punctuation has gotten a lot better. I made a lot of errors during the beginning of the year and I am starting to make a lot less. Also, my thesis statements have gotten tremendously better. At the beginning of the year they were really boring. As the year began to progress, the statements got more interesting and creative. My analysis throughout essays have gotten better. I am much better now at determining things like theme, tone, and finding many literary devices. I can also set up my essays
As a writer there are many elements of writing that I struggle with, especially when composing an essay. When writing an essay, there are usually many skills that need to be used in order to be successful with the writing assignment. Many times in writing I struggle with explaining and fully developing the supporting details and ideas in my essay. I would also like to improve on incorporating clear topic sentences and concluding sentences, connecting my paragraphs ideas back to my thesis. Lastly, improvement can be made in my writing by avoiding awkward or wordy sentences. Writers face numerous challenges in their writing but strive to overcome or improve these challenges with each piece they write.
In this semester my achievement of improving my writing skills has increased significantly. My sentence lengths vary in a positive manner along with my word choice improving, becoming more complex and of writing expectation. My main struggle this semester would be the peer editing. Although I have improved significantly I still find it difficult to edit others papers. Further more than the common spelling and grammatical errors. I believe my essays have improved drastically from the beginning of the semester towards the end.
Another place I greatly improved in was my ability to write a counter-argument to an audience with an opposing viewpoint. The third essay that I wrote was Analysing Visual Arguments (AVA). In this paper, I dissected an advertisement for the World Wildlife Fund. I did very
When my advisor told me my schedule for the fall semester, I didn’t really think about the classes I scheduled for. More specifically, I did not really know what to expect from English 1020. I mean, off course I knew that essays were involved, but that was it. I guess I just didn’t over think this course because I received high grades on my essays during high school. However, in highschool we had a certain topic that we had to write about. So I was hoping that my professor would give me freedom for my papers. Going over the syllabus, on the first day of class, I remember thinking to myself that this was going to be a little tough. I knew it was going to be a little tough because the length was not what I was used to. Each paper was about 5 pages and I was used to writing about 2 pages. However, when Dr. Springsteen explained the papers, I was relieved that we had total freedom on our papers. I have to admit, this English class has taught me many new things. Mainly, English 1020 has taught me to be more detailed in my writing and to look at the bigger picture when writing about an article or magazine. I was surprised by the end of how my writing improved from all the feedback and help I got for my essays.
When I first started the class I was struggling a lot. Since English is my second language, I had many stressful moments that made me think about dropping my classes. But when I thought about my future, I just kept studying even harder, waiting for my performance to improve. As a result, I felt like every time I wrote an essay, it got easier, which tells me that I’m on the right path. In addition, this class has helped me improve my grammar, taught me an important life lesson about sticking on my goal and helped me to enhance my computer skills
